Using maps in Basecamp without GPS attached

From some posts I have determined that it is possible to make the maps on my Garmin 64s available on my PC even when the device is not attached. Copying them to a USB stick or an SD card, attaching it to the PC and then starting Basecamp. That works as advertised.

However, other posts seem to imply that those file could be copied to a "Virtual Disk" on the PC, thus eliminating the need for attaching the USB or SD card each time I use Basecamp. I have tried this using this procedure for the virtual disk (http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/5291/how-to-create-a-virtual-hard-drive-in-windows-7/). I copied the files off of the SD card to the virtual drive and started Basecamp. It did not find the maps. What step in this process did I miss?

I also seem to recall that some posts said something like "removable virtual disk" or "virtual USB drive". If that is different from what I did, what is the procedure?

Thanks.....RDK
  • Did you place the files in a folder named Garmin?

SUSSAMB....I hate to start up another one of these threads, but ....

Yes, the files are in a Garmin folder and this is a new install on a computer which has never seen Basecamp before. The virtual hard drive is an exact copy of the SD card.

    Further testing:

    1. Without the virtual drive and without the SD card = no maps, as expected

    2. Without the Virtual drive but with the SD card = all the maps corresponding to previous experiences

    3. Virtual drive but without SD card = no maps

Now, I repeat myself, is there something different between how I defined my virtual drive and what some folks call a removable or Virtual USB drive?

    ...RDK

ps...Can you please correct the typo in the title?
  • Basecamp only looks at drives that are indicated as being removable.

I use the ImDisk software (mentioned in the JaVaWa link above).

Thanks. I created a "removable" disk and it worked flawlessly with Basecamp.

I looked at ImDisk, but liked the idea of using an encrypted drive. Thus I downloaded Dekart's Private Disk Light. It installed easily, but I recommend unchecking the "Recommended" install check box. It asks for registration information and automatically loads your current logon id and company name, which I blanked out.

Creating a disk is easy, just click the "Create" button and point to a folder where it can create the disk image file

I modified the shortcut to include a command line which automatically provides the file location and prompts for the password. For now I just click that before loading Basecamp, but this could easily be added to the StartUp folder. The password can also be included in the command line, but I did not do that.
    "C:\Program Files\Dekart\Private Disk Light\" /path:C:\MyVirtualDrive\MyDrive

However, would be interested in any feedback or reviews on this program. I'm always VERY leery about downloading and using free programs. My dad always said that "nothing is ever really free"! I checked the web but could not find any good security based reviews. Can this program and the related "encrypted drives" be trusted around sensitive data?

    Thanks again....RDK
  • Given its recommended by JaVaWa I suspect it'll be fine :)

    Err. For maps? Why??

(The virtual disk is a file. If the disk it is on is encrypted, it will be encrypted too.)

You don't say which maps you're wanting to use in this manner, but fwiw, I have both Open Street Maps and Open Cycle Maps installed on my laptop hard drive. No virtual drive needed. Both work just fine in Basecamp without my GPS, a GPSMAP 62S being attached.

    Cheers,
