Custom Google map to Basecamp

Hi there,
I've created a custom google map by dragging around my route (link).

Is there a way to import this route into Basecamp?

Thanks!
  • I assume you mean you've created a route? Export it as a kml or kmz file then import it into Basecamp.

    Mac BC 4.5.1 ver

I just upgraded to 4.5.1 on Mac and now can't import kml or kmz file at all. I created a custom route using Google Maps and trying to import the kmz or kml does not work at all. Used to work just fine prior to update, bit frustrating!

Here is a link to the map, can someone please try to import into BC 4.5.1 on a Mac ?

Converting a GM route to basecamp

You need to set up your route using MyMaps in your Google account. You can then convert the route to a .KML file which basecamp will open.

I'm seeing various results with import .kmz and .kml files. BaseCamp fails to import after downloading your map in either format. I'll try to look into this in the next release.

If I import the Google Map route sequentially from point A to B, etc, it converts into Basecamp nicely until we get to Mailliard Redwoods State Park. That site breaks the conversion. Hope that helps. Maybe it is not a true waypoint that converts into basecamp.

Wondering when is that planned for? Also IMHO, import of kmz & kml files should not break as this is integral to route planning aside from native BC capabilities.

I tracked down the problem today and it looks like the issue is with an external tool we use, xsltproc. The issue has been reported, but there's not much I can do until there's a new xsltproc version released with the fix.

I actually found a workaround for the problem yesterday, so this will be fixed in the next release of BC.

The problem is with KML or KMZ that has tracks (LinearLine or LinearRing elements) with a coordinates node containing more than around 5000 points. For now, you can use a 3rd party tool to convert the KML to GPX, then import the gpx into BaseCamp. Or you can break your route up into smaller segments in google maps, then export the KML.
