Route not matching map

I'm having some problems of getting the routes to work on my Etrex 30.

I make a route on my laptop, transfer it to the Etrext. Then when I try that route I get the message "This route does not match the available maps". When I try the option to find alternates, it won't work either.

All my older routes seem to work fine. I've been trying to figure out what the difference is between the map in my basecamp and my Etrex. I have downloaded the latest map (couple of tiles around the Delhi, India area). When I double click it tells me " no mountable file system".

In basecamp I see the following maps:
- Global map
- OpenfietsmapBenelux
- OSM Generic Routable (new style)

In Etrex I see the following maps/files:

Internal memory in Garmin:
- gmapbmap.img
- gmaptzmap.img
- OSM generic tourable.img

SC card in Garmin:
- gmapsupp.img
- Openfietsmap Benelux.img

I'm still a bit confused between these different maps.
When looking at my Etrext through the normal menu, I can see four maps. Obviously the Global, which I always leave enabled. The fietsmap is disables whilst I'm in India. Then I still have two more maps which both give me the details here in Delhi, I can't tell the difference and I make sure either one is enabled.

I have re-created the route to see if that would solve the problem, but I get the same problem of the route not matching the map. So there is some difference between my Basecamp and what I have on the Etrex. Any thoughts what it is and how to solve? Thanks

  • You can't work it out and neither can I looking at the names you've supplied as there could be various issues. Since you're confused why not remove all the maps from your Etrex and send them again from Basecamp? After you send each one do what I do, rename the map on your Etrex so that you know what it is. JaVaWa's Device Manager enables you to do that easily http://www.javawa.nl/jdm_en.html
  • I've deleted all maps (img) files on the Etrex memory and the SD card. For good measure I also downloaded a new map.
Put it all in the Etrex and I'm still getting the same error message. Remarkably, the track which is based on the same route works fine. Tried making a new different route. Just to see if that would make a difference, but again the same message.

    Any thoughts?

  • Sorry you are having an issue. That message typically means a different map was used to create and calculate the route, than is installed on the device. Which map are you using when you calculate the route? Do you know where the gmapsupp.img on your SD card came from. I would try moving that map off your card and try again. If that doesn't work, I would call product support as they have more tools at their disposal for diagnosing your issue.
  • Well, I'm beginning to get some progress.

I have basicly re-installed and downloaded everything. New base camp, downloaded the various maps from OSM (generic routable new style), put it all in the Etrex and recovered the data (routes, tracks and waipoints) from a back up. Master reset on the Etrex

At least when I choose "where to go" and I chose a route, the route loads, I press go and it appears on the screen. However, it doesn't start routing. I checked and in the guidance method was set to off road, so I set that to on road for time, tried for distance as well

But as soon as I turn that feature on (time or distance) I get the message Route calculation error. Maps do not have routable roads in this area. But the map is routable.

Any thoughts or suggestion for next steps??
  • Are you using a routeable map on your Etrex? If not it will just display the route.

Also depends on how you created the route? Also did you select a routing profile or is direct routing selected?
  • Yes, this is a routable map dowloaded from OSM, which I have been using for many years. Route has been created on Basecamp. Initially it did it only with my last created routes. But no none of my routes work. So all the routes that used to route, show the same problems
  • What routing profile is selected on your Etrex?
  • What routing profile is selected on your Etrex?

Guidance method: On road for time
    Calculate routes for: Car/motorcycle
    Lock on route: yes
    Off road transitions: Auto
    Avoidance setup: Road features

    Thanks for helping out

  • As advised above you had best call support as everything looks normal, assuming the map is indeed routeable.

So I contacted the helpdesk of the dealer in the Netherlands where I bought my Etrex nearly three years ago. Initially a couple of mails back and forth, but in the end I just phoned.

In Basecamp under 'preferences' there is a 'transfer' option. In there is an option to "math the route to the map you are transferring to". I had this on. Seemed logical, however, apperently this might screw up the transfer!! So I was advised to switch it off, recalculate the routes, and transfer the routes to my Etrex once again. Sure enough, everything appears to be working now.

Except that my mini SD card does not show up any more in Finder or in Basecamp. So that's the next project trying to figure that out.

Thanks for all your suggestions and support
