Data not showing on Etrex

Not sure if there is a special section for Etrex problems, first post so here goes:

Yesterday evening I created a route and some waypoints in Basecamp and transferred them to my Etrext as I have done hundreds of time. I checked the Etrex and everything was fine. I also update the Etrex to the latest SW version 4.30

This morning when I was about to set of of my tour something very peculiar had happened. When I click on "where to go" there where no routes, no waypoints at all. So all the others such as 'recent finds', 'coordinates' etc where there but there was no route and no waypoints. There was the usual track, but nothing in it whereas there should have been several dozens of track in there as well
I've rebooted the Etrex a few times, took the batteries out.

Then I reconnected to Basecamp, as all data is still on my PC, but whatever option I try, I can't get it to show on my Etrex. So for instance when I 'send my collection to device' the usual selection screen pops up, I tick routes, tracks waypoint and then it appear to be busy for 20 seconds or so transferring all the data, but when I check my Etrex nothing is showing.
So either I'm making some very fundamental mistake in how I try to send data to my device, or something else is going on.

When I hook the Etrex up to my Mac I can see all the waypoint, tracks and routes are there on the internal memory as well as on SD card. All the various fiddling has brought back the route and track option, but other then the current track and the latest route I have transferred nothing shows. The waypoints still don't show up at all!

So as far as I can see, the Etrex has all my data (waypoints, routes, tracks) but is not showing any (or very limited) when I go to the "where to go" option. Also, I noticed, overnight it has become very slow to start up.

Any thoughts, suggestions would be most welcome

  • This is probably an indexing error within your Etrex, that plagues most Garmin handhelds and is why many tend to use sd cards for all their data. With a card you remove the card, reboot the GPS so that it starts 'clean'. Then switch it off, reinsert the card and switch it on again ... this forces a re-index of all the data on the card.

With data on the device the solution is to use Basecamp to delete all the data, disconnect from your PC/Mac, switch on the Etrex so it starts 'clean' then switch off. Reconnect to PC/Mac and resend data. Clearly that's not something you can do when out on hikes etc, hence my earlier comment about using a sd card :)
  • Thanks,
I fiddled around a bit along those lines. Deleted all GPX data on the internal memory and the SD card. Then reloaded everything from Basecamp. Seems to have done the trick! I also tried to do a master reset as per the Garmin instructions which should also result in all data being deleted from the device. Wouldn't work for me at all.

Anyway I seem to be back up again. I'm still a bit puzzled on how the internal memory works in conjunction with the SD cars. All data seems to be present on both? Is that normal?

    Thanks again,

    Jeroen
  • It'll only be present in both if you've sent it to both. Note too that a master reset won't delete data on the card.
  • I need to check because I'm not aware of any settings. Basecamp has a "send my collection to device". I used that and they ended up on both. Not sure if there is a separate setting for that.

But going by your earlier comments, it seems to make sense to only have the data on the SD card, so I can start the GPS on its own.

  • Send to device will send it to your Etrex, there will be a separate card listed if you have a card installed.
  • Thanks, that worked for me. I was having same frustrating problem with etrex 20 on firmware 4.6
  • Thank you for that... worked for my eTrex 30x 5-years later!
