Moving from Windows to Mac

I've recently made the move from Windows to Mac. I'm trying to figure out the best way transfer my Basecamp setup to the Mac. I've tried the most obvious thing, Basecamp backup on Windows and restore on the Mac, but the backup file formats don't seem to be compatible. Every time I try to restore a Windows backup on the Mac, I get an "Invalid File Format" error. BTW, restore from a Mac backup works fine.

I can do an export to a GPX file, but that doesn't include any of the BirdsEye imagery that I've downloaded on my Windows machine. I really don't want to re-download all of the imagery.

Is there any way to do what I want?

  • Do you have the latest versions of BaseCamp on both your PC and Mac?

I'm using 4.4.8 on the Mac and 4.4.7 on Windows, which I downloaded and installed this morning. I had the same problem with earlier versions and I was hoping that this may have been fixed, but it wasn't.

I'm told that the backup on Windows and restore on Mac should work, so I'll open a case to see if we can fix that.

    For now, I would
    1. export 'My Collection' as GDB instead of GPX.
    2. Mount a SD card on Windows BaseCamp and send all your Birdseye imagery, photos, and KMLs to this SD card.
    3. Import your Windows exported GDB file into Mac BaseCamp
    4. Mount your SD card, then receive all the Birdseye, photos, and KMLs.

    Hope that helps.
  • Thanks, your suggestion did the trick, though a bit tedious. On the plus side, I took the opportunity to clean up some things I no longer wanted.

One thing that would be nice is to not require an SD card. From my perspective, it shouldn't matter whether the storage device is an SD hard or a hard drive.

I'm just about to convert from a PC to a MAC .. I have a ton of information on my PC .. has the problem been fixed where I can backup on a PC and then restore to my Mac?? (Assuming I'm using the most current version on both).
