Are route avoidances automatically activated in the device?

Hi.

I create a route from A to B in BaseCamp, and for that route create a custom activity profile that has settings such as avoid interstates and avoid tolls. When I copy this to the device and start the route, does the GPX file contain embedded information that automatically avoids interstates and tolls on the device, or do I need to remember to set these avoidances manually before starting the route?

I have a 10-day trip coming up, and some days use highways and others deliberately avoid them. It would be great if the device set the avoidances and preferences for each route automatically depending on what I set in BaseCamp for that day's route, otherwise I need to make a note each day of how to configure avoidances on the devices before starting that day's route. Is this possible?

Thanks!
  • It depends on which device you have and also whether at any stage it needs to recalculate, which most will do if you take a wrong turn for example. The safest way I've found is to set the avoidances etc on your GPS to match those in BaseCamp and then recalculate on your GPS. Having done so check all is well by comparing with the BaseCamp route. If not insert more via or shaping points until the routes match.

Note you'll have less to do if you ensure the map used in BaseCamp matches the one on your GPS.

Thanks. I'm using a BMW Nav V device.

I've been using Tyre up until very recently, and with Tyre I'm familiar with having to set the device preferences to match the preferences in Tyre/Google in order for the calculated route to match. I was just hoping that by using BaseCamp it would be possible for the device to automatically configure the preferences and avoidances configured for each individual route. I'm familiar with using multiple shaping points, but sometimes a device will still jump onto a highway at any opportunity if not configured to avoid them. It would be lovely if one day the options selected in BaseCamp are automatically activated on the device when the route is started to ensure the calculated route will match the route in BaseCamp.
  • Unfortunately that doesn't happen and is device dependant. I agree it would be great if all devices accepted every BaseCamp setting but that requires action throughout the Garmin teams to resolve it. Given that there isn't even a common POI symbol set across BaseCamp, on the trail and on the road devices I can't see it happening anytime soon.

The BMW Nav V device can be set not to recalculate without asking. It has very good route fidelity between BC and itself.

One way to ensure that your routes as shown on the device are the same as in BC is to use BC to create a track from the route and then transfer both to the Nav V. I usually set the track to show on the map with a color that contrasts with the Magenta route line display. That makes it very easy to see any deviation between them. Also, the Nav V has the ability to construct a Route from a Track. Be aware that the Route so constructed only has a beginning and an end point and those points are the only places you can join it. If you know where the route is supposed to be and you are somewhere in the middle of it when it goes awry one can convert the track to a route while on it and join the end point to overcome this limitation.
  • Routes made with Tyre are recalculated by the device, with the possibility of deviations.
When you create routes in BaseCamp (using the same map as on te device) the Nav V will import it without changes, even if the avoidance settings are different.
A track is also a good alternative, and isn't map dependent.

    To answer this question:
does the GPX file contain embedded information that automatically avoids interstates and tolls on the device?

    No, it doesn't.
