Route ( 590LM and Edge 1000) only has a start/finish and I can't actually join it !

Hi
I'm clearly an idiot ... this is the first time I've used Garmin base camp but I've come across a pretty simple trap !

I successfully downloaded a 100km cycle ride for Sundays charity event.
I thought I'd familiarise myself with the route by quickly zipping round it on my motorbike ( 590LM ) before cycling it ( Edge 1000)

The problem was the route only offered nav options ..to ride to the START or the END , whereas I actually wanted to ride the route as depicted on the map.

Clearly I don't want to experience the same thing on Sunday on my cycle . It was frustrating.
Despite using both devices for over a year ...I guess I don't understand routes/tracks .. Could anyone please help !

Thanks Stuart
  • If it's like the nuvis you select the first point, it will then navigate you to the second along your route. If you select the end point it will calculate it's own route.

    How though it would work on the Edge I have no idea.

    Sadly , despite riding directly over the start point , it never "latches on to the **** route !

    When half a mile away from the start , it urges you to turn round and return to the start ! Highly frustrating.
    If the route had waypoints , I'd simply direct it to the next waypoint , and then I'm sure it would "behave ", but the way basecamp exports the route to the 590LM it is simply a 60 mile route with no waypoints.

    Thanks for the reply though - much appreciated.
  • Was this a route, or rather trip, that you created or was it a track? A track might behave the way you describe although I don't have a Zumo. If a trip it should work the way I describe.

    The file was an 86 Kb file named ...shakesspring15-complete-100km-2.gpx
    In basecamp it looked ok and had 800 points

    It just behaved badly in both GPS units and I couldn't get to "follow " the route1 I could only go to the start or finish points !

    SUCCESS!! Ok , with help from another thread I've solved it .

    Basically I'd missed a step out in Basecamp.
    Previously;
    (i) I'd take the bike race promoters GPS file ,(ii) opened it in base camp and (iii)sent to my GPS...... What I should have done is ;
    (i)I'd take the bike race promoters GPS file , (ii) opened it in base camp and (iii) Right click on the file and press"create route from track" then (iv)sent to my GPS......

    Now in the ( motorbike 590LM ) or ( cycle Edge 1000) I can see all the waypoints and I'm confident it will behave!

    SUSSABMB , thanks for looking at it ! Maybe my errors will help another user ?
  • Good to know you've solved it. It's why I queried whether it was a track rather than a route.
