MacBook Pro not seeing GPS

Former Member
Former Member
I have 2013 MacBook Pro running X 10.9.5.
My GPS is an old GPS 276C which connects perfectly to my Imac but isn't seen by Basecamp on the Macbook.

I am using a Garmin USB cable. The GPS beeps and says USB connected, but Basecamp nor WebUpdater will see the GPS.

I have tried :
>numerous USB cables
>Rebooting MacBook
>Deleted Basecamp and reinstalled
>Took battery out of GPS and reinstalled.
>connected with GPS on and off. etc.

The GPS regularly beeps and says USB Connected, but software does not see it.

Looked for USB drivers for MAC and didn't find any.

Suggestions??

Add an USB 2.0 hub inbetween.

Add an USB 2.0 hub inbetween.

    Tried that. No luck.
  • I went through this a bit ago and the short answer is it will not work. The Mac USB 3 port will not recognize earlier Garmin units such as the 276C, or in my case 478. This came directly from the Garmin Marine support people. I tried absolutely everything, powered hubs, unpowered hubs, thunderbolt to USB conversion, running windows through Parallels, with no luck.

Not Good news... I motorcycle camp and would like my Macbook for making routes at camp.

I am not going via Thunderbolt, but the USB port on the Macbook which is USB 3.0..
Seems there ought to be some way around this..?
  • The thunderbolt try was a last gasp after everything else had failed. My solution, that you probably don't want to hear, was to pickup an older, used MacBook air with USB 2.

    Good thought, $$$.

Wish Basecamp would run off the Ipad Air.
  • That isn't good news. I'm truly sorry for the inconvenience. There is one other workaround and that is to get a newer GPS :). It amazes me how many users are still using the 276. I loved that unit when it came out, but it's getting pretty long in tooth at this point. The zumo 390 and 590 are both really nice devices. A lot of motorcyclists like the Montana as well. I wish I could recommend the 660, but it has issues with BaseCamp that we haven't been able to resolve.

I just like the 276, plus I have two motorcycles hard wired with AutoCom intercom, to mate with the 276. I am sure a lot of it has to do with being very familiar with it and Mapsource. Still don't love Basecamp.

Retry with the USB 2.0 hub, because it's the USB 3.0 port in the Macbook, and maybe the USB 2.0 hub needs to be powered with a separate adapter.

I know this is not handy for camping, but the USB 2.0 hub solved this for me on several occasions at customers with Mac books (and Windows notebooks) using older USB 1.0/1.1 GPS receivers.
