Communication between Basecamp and device

I am new to MacBooks. I have a Macbook Pro with Basecamp 4.4.6. I also have an etrex Vista HCx and am new to installing maps on the device. I have been able to load Openfiets Lite onto the device successfully. I note that the Edit mode on Basecamp is inhibited i.e. the Delete and Delete from etrex functions, are greyed out and not functioning! Any ideas?

Thanks for your prompt response. My etrex Vista HCx has a USB interface so I would have thought the functionality would be ok?
  • Ah ok. Then it'll work with Basecamp, my memory of the Vista range is waning :)

Does the Vista have an option to set it to mass storage mode? If so is it set to that? If not that may inhibit some Basecamp functions. Alternatively if its set to mass storage mode you may want to try Garmin mode, to see if that makes any difference.

If neither work then hopefully someone with a more detailed knowledge of your GPS may be able to help.
  • Where did you get BaseCamp? If you installed it using the Garmin BaseCamp installer, then in Applications you'll find two other Garmin apps that will help, MapManager and MapInstall. MapManager deals with maps on your computer, and I think it's the app that starts if you double click on a gmap file like the ones you downloaded from OpenFietsMap. MapInstall is what you use to install maps on a device. If you got BaseCamp from the App Store, then you should go to http://garmin.com/osx and get MapInstall and see if that helps. A separate MapManager installer isn't available from there, but you can always download the BaseCamp installer (just ignore the fact that it's "available in the Mac App Store") and get it that way, or maybe the MapInstall installer also installs MapManager.

Having seen SCHINDER's reply maybe I'm confused. I thought the two issues weren't connected, you're not trying to use Edit mode to try to 'delete/delete from Etrex' the map are you? If so that won't work. Equally they'll only be active (ie not greyed out) if you've selected something that can be deleted.

    Loading maps onto GPS

    I tried the following:

    1. I purchased a micro SD to standard SD converter and plugged them both into the SD slot on my Macbook Pro.

    2. I deleted the Garmin folder and re-inserted the micro SD card into the GPS

    3. I checked Basecamp to ensure it was reading Openfietsmap Lite (GBR_21_01_2015) and it was.

    4. I similarly checked MapManager and it was there.

    5. I similarly checked MapInstall and it was there.

    6. My Garmin etrex Vista HCx was checked and no map was listed in 'Maps'

    7. I then attempted to transfer Openfietsmap Lite (GBR_21_01_2015) to the GPS using MapInstall.

    8. MapInstall checks device ID and all OK. Openfietsmap Lite (GBR_21_01_2015) was then selected OK and displayed. The when asked to confirm transfer the status bar shows up instantly completely blue and the new window states that installation is complete but there is no map in the GPS!

    Any ideas?
  • Just to make sure, did you select any map tiles before telling MapInstall to send them to the device? It's been a while since I last used MapInstall, but I seem to remember that you have to select something (or use command-A to select everything) in order to actually get it to transfer to the device.

    Further transfer issues

Thank you. I had not noticed that you have to make a further selection of tiles during the MapInstall process. I have now managed to down load some tiles to my etrex Vista HCx and when I select 'Maps' I can see the downloaded map title which I can select using the tick box. However, the GPS device does not then display the downloaded map! Any further ideas?
  • You may need to zoom in to see them. Also ensure you don't have other maps selected.

Thank you for replies. I have zoomed in without success and there are no other maps on the microSD card.
