No topo lines on my 24K maps?

Hello Basecamp gurus. This is my first post. I did a search or two on the forum but came up empty. With my GPSmap 62st attached to my Mac, I can see both the 100k topomaps that came on my unit, and the 24k maps on the micro SD chip I bought and installed. When viewing the 24k maps, at all zoom levels, I just see rivers and roads, but no topo information. Just a grid over a sea of yellow. What am I doing wrong?

Has anyone developed a comprehensive user guide for this software?

Thanks.

lol I have the 62stc (nah nah) ;) and I knew the topos I was looking at were nothing like the USGS topos I use on Google Earth but I thought that's just how things were with my GPS and BC... just basic bare topos. I don't have extra topos installed just whatever came with the T in STC which are the 100k Topos. But when I look at Google images I see lush detailed topos which I don't see on my unit or on Basecamp.

Would be nice if someone could help explain. Is there something on my 62stc that I'm supposed to do to get the lush detailed topos to toggle on and off?

And in basecamp? Are we just stuck with the rivers, streams, roads and a couple of basic contour lines?
  • Do you guys have detail set to Highest in Basecamp? Without that you'll lose detail.

    A genuine Garmin pre-programmed card?

How ? Ive looked around and even searched the help index. I see the overview, 2d and 3d functions but nothing specifically about detail. For what its worth, I have MA maps installed, too. When I view 100k topo maps in BC, everything is off by almost 2/10th of a mile and there's no lakes, ponds, rivers, etc. But when I view the MA maps, I get some basic detail and the map lines up properly.

This was a refurb but I don't want to blame that yet. I just can't find this "highest detail" option you're talking about...
  • On Windows it's under View, Toolbars, Detail level ... not sure with a mac.

Show the map detail toolbar and then change the setting.

View -> Toolbars -> Detail Level

Also make sure "Basic Map" (no detail) is off in View or hit Ctrl-G

or whatever the equivalent is on the Mac version.
  • There is no equivalent on a Mac. The Toolbar selection under View simply doesn't exist. There's no way to choose Detail Level. The detail level just seems to change as you zoom in and out on the map (I'm using 3D view). Zoom in enough, and you see 20 ft. contours. Zoom out, and it changes to 100 ft. Minor roads disappear as you zoom out. This is all with my "Topo U.S. 24 k Northeast" map, but I have it installed on my Mac Pro rather than reading it off a device. BaseCamp 4.4.5. The maps I've had for years, and they came unlocked, so I have them installed on one device (Edge 800) and two computers (Mac Pro and Mac Book Pro).

Ouch, ok, well, I did find that View/Toolbar/Detail option earlier but keeping in mind I'm a newb, it didn't occur to me that all that did was make a little button (see: toolbar?) appear on the left side of the toolbar and THAT was what I had to play with after.

So, I used it and it does provide more detail like a couple more contour lines per hill OR sea level heights of hills, etc... but the same 2 problems still remain:

    1. I don't get the lush green topo look that I think of when I think of TOPOs. But the thing is I don't even know what 100k topos are supposed to look like. Whether they're supposed to look like the lush green topos I always think of as topos or the stuff I'm seeing now (pic attached)

    2. When 100k topo is loaded, all gps data on the BC screen is off by almost 2/10th of a mile. When I switch maps back to MA maps, everything once again lines up fine... any ideas?

    Thanks

    Yes, there is:
  • Ahh, a slider. I completely missed that. I was looking for a menu option. Thanks!
