nuvi 2797LMT maps cannot be accessed?

I own a 2797LMT and bought it more for the 7” screen then for the lifetime maps. Living in Thailand I use third party maps by Nostra/ESRI.

I discovered with a friends help that having a Garmin device with lifetime maps maybe more of a curse than a blessing, if you want a more open and accessible Garmin.

The problem I’m having is I cannot locate the USA maps to delete off of my device and my third party maps are also hidden away somewhere.

Also other third party apps that make working with a device much easier like JaVaWa cannot access or read my 2797LMT to help organization and management a much more pleasant experience.

Is there anyway to make the 2797LMT like other nuvi’s where maps are readable and more accessible? South of me in Bangkok is a authorized Garmin service center, is there anything they can help with?

Hope so…
  • Deleting the original maps from the device isn't a good idea. As for third party maps, they need to be placed in a folder named Map on the device. Some 3rd party maps will be immediately visible in Basecamp, others won't. You can use JaVaWa's program Device manager to made maps visible http://www.javawa.nl/jdm_en.html

In terms of making your maps 'readable and more accessible' your nuvi is no different to any other, you just need to understand what to do.

    Hi SUSSAMB,

I read the link you posted but was unable to locate how to use JaVaWa to make files available.

I got an email form Jaco the developer of JaVaWa GMTK and he referenced this link at Garmin’s forum https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?35639-Garmin-Mass-Storage-Setting-and-Changing-it-out-of-MTP-mode

I did as the link described and changed the MTP settings from Auto Detect to Mass Storage and JaVaWa still couldn’t read the device. In the Garmin forum link (above) after files were made available to see a backup of the Garmin device was recommended. Another link was referenced for backing up and the .system folder was referenced as an important one to include in the backup, but I found no .system folder in Mac’s finder either.

I’m still missing parts of the puzzle?

    Thanks, any other tips?
  • Well to achieve what you want you shouldn't need to access the .system folder, there are files in there that if messed about with could render your nuvi inoperable. However with that warning, once your device is in mass storage mode you need to set your mac/pc to show hidden and system files, I'm not sure how you do that on a mac as I have a PC.

JaVaWa Device manager doesn't make files available, what it does is allow you to set 3rd party maps to be visible in Basecamp. If you run Device manager with your nuvi connected to your mac it will list which maps you have loaded and allow you to either make them visible (or not) in Basecamp.

    Hi SUSSAMB,

My bad, Jaco pointed out that I was using the wrong app and needed JaVaWA Device Manager, I had wrongly installed JaVaWa GMTK not understanding the difference.

Also for other Mac users Jaco informed me that; "When you're using a Mac the MTP setting doesn't have to be changed, but it doesn't any harm either. (because OS X doesn't support MTP the device switches to mass storage mode automatically)."

    Thank you for the support.
