route won't adhere to road paths

When I create a route in base camp on the city navigator road maps, sometimes the route adheres to the road paths, and sometimes it cuts across the road paths from point to point. It actually does sometimes one, sometimes the other within the same route. I'm pretty sure I'm doing something to cause this, but I don't know what. Obviously one plotting technique is good for road biking, the other for wilderness hiking. How do I control it? Many thanks for any advice/instruction.
  • You control it by adjusting the activity profiles. You can also should you wish edit the way they work, or create new ones.

Many thanks for the reply. Changing the activity profile seems to have no effect on whether the route adheres to the road grid on my device. I'm forced to put in a turning mark every 50 feet to keep the route on the road once the route is downloaded to the device (I have an etrex 20). Needless to say this is fairly tedious. Perhaps you could give me more detailed instructions on how to change the settings you're talking about. Are you changing these settings in base camp or on the device? Base Camp seems to allow the route to adhere to roads, it's on the device that it doesn't.
  • If it's on the device that's a different issue. Assuming you have a routeable map loaded and you're using the same in Basecamp you need to go to Set Up, Routing, and ensure Guidance Method is set to 'on road'. The route in Basecamp and on your Etrex should then match.

Yes, I have routeable map and am using the same in Basecamp. Guidance Method is set to "on road" on the device and yet the route does not adhere to the road on the device. Hmmm, seems to be a glitch. Thanks for the help.
  • Is that routeable map selected in Basecamp? Are you able to post screenshots showing the difference between Basecamp and your Etrex?

Yes, the routeable map is the only one I have in basecamp other than the basic map, so it's the same one that's on the device. I don't know how to post screenshots showing the difference between Basecamp and my Etrex.
  • Well I'm stumped, if you have the City Navigator map in your Etrex and are using that in Basecamp the routes should pretty much match up. Why it's not sticking to the roads if you've selected 'On road' in routing I don't know, unless you have some weird avoidances set?

On my Etrex I have 'Unpaved roads' as avoid, and 'Calculate route for car/motorcycle', together with 'On road for time' as guidance method and Lock on road set to 'Yes'.

Yeah, me too. I've now got all my settings exactly like yours and the route still takes me across ponds instead of following the road unless I put in massive quantities of waypoints. By the way, is there a limit to the number of waypoints for a given route? I can't get the Etrex to make my new route active. Might it now have too many waypoints?
  • Only 50 points for an 'on road' route, normally you'll get a warning that there can only be 50 points ...

Hmm. Maybe that's why it won't load now. I guess I'll have to break it into parts.
