Export trk and geotagged photos as KML for use in GE or Google Maps

Hi all -

First post and likely already answered, but I have not found it via forum or Google searches.

I used to use an app called gpicsync form code.google.com to take a track off my Garmin Quest II and marry non-geotagged photos to the track based upon timestamps and generate a KML file which allowed for viewing the track and photos via Goolge Earth or Google Maps.

An example of that output is here: https://maps.google.com/maps?q=http:%2F%2Fgraywarrant.us%2Fmaps%2F2Nov08%2Fdoc-web.kml&hl=en&sll=36.383046,-89.376046&sspn=16.952601,17.402344&t=h&z=8

Clicking on one of the blue pushpins will give you a thumbnail view of a photo - it used to bring up a full size picture, but something in the past 5 years has changed, but you get the just of what I am trying to do.

So fast forward 5 years and I have finally upgraded from the Quest II to a 62stc unit which does the photo geotagging for me. I figure - great, things should be easier.

So how do I take a track and the geotagged photos taken along that track and create a KML file which will display the route and the photos (preferably thumbnails and then hyperlinks to full size photos)?

I am using a Garmin 62stc and Basecamp ver 4.2.4

Thank you -

Can't share that via GE or Google Maps. Unless I am missing something?
  • True you can share via GE or GM but you can share using Adventure site. I noticed this post by Azdrmn:
The website is currently aimed largely at allowing non-Garmin users, e.g. friends and family, to see adventures without having to get BaseCamp. Downloading to the device currently exceeds the ability of the website. So for now it's a two-click download. Click the Download to BaseCamp button on the website, and then the Send List to Device button in BaseCamp.

I'm sure you want to continue using GE/GM but I think your work flow could be greatly simplified if you started using Adventures to share. I think the process of moving GE/GM to Adventures would be much easier than the reverse.

Sorry to be Captain Obvious as I am quite certain you already know this, but, a second click, this time on the thumbnail will bring the photo up full screen.

I would bet the folks to blame for the change are the Google guys and girls. The Google map folks are just totally out of control when it comes to changing their interface around. They and their Google Earth cohort aren't too shy at eviscerating the usefulness of their Android products either. So, I agree with you that Garmin should take up the portability challenge and make it easy for us to use and move the data generated by our Garmin Devices any way we want and just compete by making their way better than any others. They are more than halfway there with the Garmin Adventures website.
