Am I Dreaming?

Will trip planner finally become useful to me? Will this be possible? Please say yes. The ability to take a selection of existing routes or tracks and meld them all into a trip. Well, I could make use of that.

    Steve, Steve...wakeup Steve!
  • I guess you are dreaming for an easier method but I usually make my routes the traditionally way and make the Trip using same waypoints in Trip Planner. I use the advance search to find user data and drag the waypoints to Trip Planner. I guess if you could select 5 routes, trip planner could assume each route a day and ask for the first day. Just a dialog with my collection that I could drag to trip planner would be helpful for me.

I agree that having the ability to drag/drop waypoints and Routes into a TP session would be very beneficial. I don't keep a lot of Routes (only Tracks) but on occasion, I have wished I could do this. It would be an easy workflow if Trip Planner were a "floating" app window. Then we could see and access any/all of our Collection Data.
  • My intention was to try and get a response from the dev team about this greyed out menu choice. If and when something like this is implemented, I'll revisit Trip Planner. In the meantime I'll dream of the day I can select 2 dozen random routes from my Destination Highways collection, a bunch of tracks in Oregon, a couple of routes in Wyoming, a final destination in Southern California, my preference for a certain hotel chain, and have Trip Planner spit out a few suggestions. Fantasy???

Guess you won't be using Trip Planner. But, in fairness, you can drag/drop existing routes/waypoints into a Trip Planner session; sort of. I say, "sort of" because you must first have a Trip.

If you create a Trip in Trip Planner of say, 10 Days, you only have to create the first day to initialize the Trip. Then you can drag/drop waypoints, routes into any day.

I'll have to try that. It's pretty much what I do now, create a long start/finish route and then drag in "must do" rides along the way, tweak it to get what I want and then break it into ~ 1 day chunks. I'd always thought Trip Planner should have been more of a "What If" tool. But then nobody asked me. :D

Finally got around to trying this, and yes it does work well. A bit cumbersome but workable. It will be interesting to see how the 2 week 8000 km ride I'm planning for September transfers and works in the new 590. I think I'll try it as a Trip but have all of the individual routes on the card just in case. ;)
  • Steve, I am gett the add to itinerary when I right click a route if I have a day selected in trip planner.
    See last post.

Looks like the difference in the Mac version is you right click from the search list.

No it is the same on Mac and Win, If you have a day selected in Trip Planner, the info has the add to itinerary
  • I don't even bother with the search function to find my own data. My workflow is to start with a data subset that's specific to the project, already organized by folder and list. This includes most of the routes and waypoints. I can then drag items into specific days of a trip directly in the left hand pane. I can see the reasoning behind the "add to itinerary" dialog using found data because when doing an along route search, you are already in the trip "day" so the program knows where to put the result. With existing data, an "add to day XXX" or "create new day" dialog option would be needed, which would be a very good addition IMO. When I originally posted I assumed this was how it would work. Because I didn't have an active trip the dialog was greyed out. Actually, if the dialog had a "add to existing itinerary" with a "day xxx" and "new" option as well as a "create new trip starting with" choice it would make more sense to me. Right now BaseCamp and Trip Planner almost act as two different applications running in the same window rather than Trip Planner being an integral part of BaseCamp.

The only reason I'm playing with it is to see if there's any difference or added utility when using the created trip in a GPS that uses the hardware based Trip Planner. I'm quite happy creating routes with date specific names and navigating from them as I've been doing from the early Street Pilot days.
  • I have started using trip planner for the slide to show the route, the nearest city showing as I slide alone is very useful to me.
