Please tell CS that BC is compatible with zumo 660

This is starting to scare me. Here is verbatim text from an email from Garmin CS. Can anyone confirm whether this is true? I always export GPX files from BC, so maybe I've just missed the "memo" that it no longer supports the zumo 660, but luckily my 660 also is blissfully ignorant and uses the pre-planned BC routes without error (most of the time [grin]).

The following devices are NOT compatible with routing in BaseCamp:

zumo 400 series
zumo 500 and 550
zumo 660 and 665
These devices may appear to take a route without issue however, when navigating the route, an error message may appear. An alternate program to use is Mapsource. First download the map to your computer, then use MapSource to create and transfer routes to your zumo.

Swell, and ever so helpful for us Mac folks.

I've been experimenting with old and new routes in the latest BC (with latest maps) and on my zumo 660 (latest maps and firmware) and it's a mixed bag. Some import with no changes; others are hopelessly messed up. Some even have waypoints missing altogether (not shaping points, real waypoints). In general, the older the map version under which the route was created, the more likely there will be problems, at least in my limited testing so far. Recalc fixes some, but often introduces other errors, and will obviously not fill in a missing waypoint.

I am very glad I did not update maps & firmware and BC prior to my big trip two weeks ago.

I can perhaps understand that the Zumo 600 series may not include the 660, but both refer to the 400 and 500 series ... no misunderstanding there, except both cannot be correct :)

Here's what that article says: "BaseCamp supports a wide range of Garmin devices. However, it does not support legacy Garmin devices, specifically devices that communicate with the computer through a serial port. Devices not compatible with BaseCamp:" etc.

The key phrase is "a wide range". Not saying it doesn't is not the same as saying it does.

Yes, and then as I and Dan have pointed out there are additional FAQs, both saying they will and won't work. It's all very confusing. Maybe one of the Basecamp team could confirm the situation and have the relevant FAQs updated to reflect consistency :)

Yeah, clarity and consistency in the FAQs would be helpful, but my main question is why the h**l would they promote the hardware/software combination then ship incompatible software, fail to fix that issue, and have no current alternatives?

My experience so far is that BC works fine with the 660. Any errors that crop up in pre-planned routes are due to causes we already know about -- incompatible map versions, waypoints too close to on-ramps, map errors, poor sat reception come to mind.

But I have not yet road tested routes created by the newest version of BC and will be more than a little irritated if it contains new code that prevents using it reliably with my 660.

As sussamb said, can someone from the BC team please weigh in on this?
