Question about Activities

If you access the same BC library using Dropbox using multiple computers, are activities stored on each computer. I have trouble keeping activities synced in trip planner. In addition if I set all legs of a day trip to a custom activity called Fastest, why does the trip show Mix mode in the route when you exit trip planner sometimes and Fastest for other trips?

Thanks

Activities are not part of the Database. An issue for all of us that share databases across machines and with Team members. Your other topic is a separate issue with Trip Planner and there are several issues with Trip Planner when it comes to Route creation/editing.
  • Thanks for the info, is there a reason preferences and activities are not stored with the Database?

In the database only content is saved. In a userfile and windows registry the program settings are saved. You can save your activities and share them, but then you have to to start Regedit program on windows and export the right branches from HKey Current user:

    Your own created activities: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Garmin\BaseCamp\Data\Profiles\*
    BaseCamp default activities: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Garmin\BaseCamp\Settings\Profiles\*

If you export botch branches and put them into Dropbox also, you can import them into the registry of another computer, name and settings are all imported then.

I suppose the Activities reside inside the Application "container" in a project file. I posted a "feature request", back when we were told BaseCamp could have multiple databases, asking for the ability to share Activities between BaseCamps. I think the Dev Team missed that one.

    Marco, Wrong OS.

    Yep, sorry Dan.

But, may be this will help: In BC Mac all is saved in one preference file in your personal profile in this file: ˜/Library/Preferences/com.garmin.BaseCamp.plist

And if you copy this file to a Dropbox location, you can use a Symbolic Link from the original file to the Dropbox file (use terminal), If you repeat that at other Mac's also and the will use the same file and settings. Problem could be screen resolution and window positions if screen resolutions on the Macs are not the same.

But I rather recreate the profiles my self than have all settings synchronized between computers ;)

Marco, Thanks for the pointers. I think that would get a bit messy since everyone has different computers/displays/etc. Hopefully the BC Dev Team will engage on this one. I would like to know if it is even feasible to share Activities with other BC installations in the future. I know that the Transportation Mode is being placed in the Route GPX data currently but then we get into Custom Activities and I think that's probably going to be a BC-only feature for a long time.
  • Not being able to share activities between computers easily is an issue that I don't have a good workaround for other than manually recreating the profiles. I'll create a case for handling this better, but I'm not sure when that would happen. Of the cuff, I like having the ability to export/import activity profiles. These could be shared between installations or other users.
  • Being 10 notches below developer, I'm sure the following is much more complex than it appears to me but you guys a kind most of the time so here goes. Why not just store the activities in the in BaseCamp folder that we put in DropBox to sync between computers. I think it would solve my syncing problem and Drtbyk's sharing problem.

Macro, I have use a Symbolic Link to the base camp folder in dropbox for years. Even after BaseCamp allows users to point to the DataBase anywhere I've been afraid to change it has never been a problem from day one.
  • It's definitely a double edged sword. I've been collaborating on ride planning with the same group for many years. Back in the "day" (MapSource only) it was a fairly easy process to share files. Now, not so much. The biggest problems we're facing are Win/OSX work flow differences and the whole activity variable. I love being able to custom design activities based on the specific task at hand and so do my friends. The problem is, we don't have the same idea as to what the optimum configuration is. Having a way to imbed the activity profile into a library or even an exported file would be very welcome.
