Discrepancy In Distances Reported By BaseCamp

I always note at the end of a hike how far I've gone. When I drop the data into BaseCamp the distance is always quite a bit less when I look at the hike summary or on the elevation chart.

Which is correct, what the GPS says at the end of the hike or what's reported within BaseCamp? Why would there be a difference? It seems that the data displayed on the GPS should be what's displayed in BaseCamp.
  • Your GPS should be accurate, I find my Etrex 20 is.

There could be numerous reasons for the Basecamp discrepancy, it could simply be calculating it from a map that doesn't contain any elevation data for example.

I much prefer using my Mac but I do have a Windows PC available so I downloaded and installed the Windows version of BaseCamp. After connecting my GPSMAP 62s the Windows version showed the same incorrect total mileage that the Mac version did.

Then I started looking around inside the Windows version and one of the tabs on the summary window called Properties showed the correct distance. This tab is not available in the Mac version.

What I find odd is both the Mac and Windows versions of BaseCamp default to an incorrect distance but if you dig in the Windows version you can find the correct distance which means the correct data are being sent from the GPS to both versions of BaseCamp but BaseCamp isn't displaying those data.

I sure would like a fix to this. It's most annoying.

Oh, I'm using a Garmin Topo 24k map on a chip in the GPS.
