BaseCamp v4.3.1 files Shared with BMW NAV IV

This weekend I was riding with a friend who has a BMW NAV IV GPS unit. I have a BMW NAV V. I created a couple of routes in BC 4.3.1 and then connected my friends NAV IV to my Mac and uploaded the files to his GPS. From all that we saw (previewing on the GPS etc), everything look normal/good.

However...once on the road my friend kept getting a message something like: "Unable to recalculate route because no roads lead to your destination". On my NAV V, no problems with the route at all. My friend had to cancel his route and reload it again in the GPS. It would work for a while, and then the same message would appear again.

Here's a link from the BMW K1600 Forum regarding this very subject:

I created the route using a start point and finish point with a series of shaping points customizing the course. Each via point was set to "NOT ANNOUNCE" when arriving at the point.

If anybody has seen a similar issue, please drop a note to this thread if you would. We're heading out on a 900 mile ride this weekend and this will make my friend crazy if it keeps happening.

  • Well as you're using different versions of the BMW Nav I suspect it's because the Nav V can handle shaping/do not alert points and the Nav IV cannot. If it works like other Garmin GPS this means the points will be converted to normal via points. This, together with possibly different map versions (?) between Basecamp and his Nav IV, could very well cause the issue you're describing.

First thing I'd check is the map versions are the same, second ensure the shaping points are EXACTLY on roads.
  • Map versions are the same (2015.10) and the shaping points seem to be on roads (no little jags out to the side). It could be the IV versus V processing of the files.

We'll keep exploring and see what happens. Thanks very much for the feedback however!

    Cheers!
  • I've had this happen on three nuvis but never my zumo. However, it has never been accompanied by the "no roads" error message, just numerous, unnecessary recalcs. Unfortunately, I can't point to a definite cause or cure, but have some thoughts that may help.

The biggest change since acquiring a zumo has been doing a master reset whenever updating maps or firmware. If your friend therefore "needs" a reset, I'd start there (save Favorites and take note of all prefs/settings first). This has been known to cure all sorts of routing weirdness. I never knew to do it when I was using the nuvis.

Other possibilities include lousy sat reception caused by obstacles or too "tight" or "low" a constellation of sats in the sky; a complex highway interchange where the GPS gets confused about which ramp it is on; a new road layout that is far enough away from what's shown on its map to fool it into thinking it's off in a cornfield.

    Hope this helps.
