Waypoints from basecamp don't match physical location when using Garmin GPS

I can locate some houses on the basecamp map and save them each as waypoints but when you drive to each, the locations are off maybe as much as half of a block. Any ideas as to why?
  • Which map? And how are you 'locating' the houses? Note on many maps the 'address' is simply an approximation of where the map thinks the house is.
  • In the US, many addresses are coded by "blocks" -- not the same as a city block, but blocks of numbers. In some cases this can mean that search results will put you on a portion of the street somewhat far from the intended destination. This has nothing to do with Garmin or BaseCamp or Navteq; it's how the data they purchase is supplied and the cost of "ground truthing" every single street number would be insanely prohibitive.

Agreed. I've seen street addresses (admittedly in remote areas) tens of miles from the actual location. If you want a precise location use Google Earth (or equivalent) street view to get the coordinates. I've been doing just than for years.

There are other reasons for locations "being off" but without further information from the OP the above is most likely the issue.
  • What is being described is "logical" addressing. Some devices support "door-to-door" addressing with precise map locations. More information is here: What is door-to-door navigation?
  • Cheers Alan, not seen that one before :)

Guess either the OP doesn't have the appropriate model or the address is in the 20% that don't have door-to-door navigation.

I've wasted enough of my life already looking for addresses. I'll trust my abilities to translate a logical address into coordinates rather than Garmin's.
  • Yeah sussamb, it was a new one to me too ... discovered by a friend in another forum. Maybe Garmin will extend this to the Euro maps in a future version. I have done some random comparisons on the 2014.40 NA map between my nuvi 3597 and my old nuvi 755. In some locations there is a significant difference in accuracy between the two. One thing that is interesting is that the 755 will show an address location at the edge of the street, while the 3597 will show the same address back off the street at the actual spot where the building is located.
  • Generally in UK it's not an issue ... our streets are much shorter than yours with houses closer together so generally easier to approximate :)

Plus you start your street addresses at "1" on on side of the road, "2" on the other, and increase by 1 as you go down the road. In the US "block" numbers are not necessarily monotonic. For example one may go from the 1,000 block to 10,000 and back to 5,000. It can be very frustrating.

Well that's not always true, but generally you're correct. Some start at 1 and go up one side of the street then back down the other side, normally in a cul-de-sac road. Blocks of flats can be confusing though as was my address in Virginia initially as it was 1421 Wolftrap Run Road. I thought I was going to be living surrounded by at least 1420 other houses, but that wasn't the case :)
