Basecamp performing in unexpected ways

I just got a GPSmap 62stc, and d/l'd Basecamp for Mac. Versions: Mac OS X 10.9.3 (13D65); BaseCamp Version 4.3.1.

When I try to use the Route function, the ensuing route does not follow the points I'm clicking with the route icon. It draws routes to a seemingly random location (see attachment Map). If I use the drag and drop method of adding a starting point and destination, it generates a different, completely inappropriate map, regardless of which activity selection I make.

Last, when I try to shut down BaseCamp, it won't quit, and I have to Force Quit it. I've tried uninstalling & reinstalling BaseCamp, as well as restarting my computer. No effect.

This all seems like the program isn't running appropriately. Has anyone else had this problem? Is there a solution?

Thanks. I don't. That's the one activity that doesn't give a totally messed up route - it gives a direct route (across streets, freeways, whatever), but not an out of the way, nonsense route. All the other activities do that.

Looking at your screenshot I'm not sure if the topo map has been fully indexed? If not then it'll be using the Basemap which could cause what you're seeing.

Thanks for the suggestion. How do I find out if the topo map is fully indexed? This is the map that came installed in the device.

With your GPS connected to your mac run Basecamp. You'll see a progress bar underneath the map in your 62 in the left hand pane. Leave the GPS connected until the progress bar has moved all the way to the right. In your screenshot it only seems to have got part way.

Thanks for the suggestion. I let the map load completely, but still get the crazy paths when I try to plot a route.

Well then it seems to me like it's using the Basemap. I've not used the topo 100k US map but believe that map you're using isn't routeable, not all maps are.

Now the map has indexed are you still having this problem? It was probably due to the fact Basecamp was in the process of indexing the map that required the forced shutdown.

Last, when I try to shut down BaseCamp, it won't quit, and I have to Force Quit it.

Thanks very much for your advice. Looks like my next move is to contact Garmin support. I'll post an update if something interesting comes out of that.

100% correct, all around. The 100K map, which comes installed on this device, is not routable. I had to purchase a 24K map to be able to produce routes. Thanks again for your advice.
