Birdseye not downloading to eTrex 30

I have all new stuff- just withing the week. I have enough memory in my SD card. The Birdseye images are fully downloaded in Basecap. I have selected to transfer to eTrex 30, and it said it was completed. I turn on etrex 30 and there is no sign of Birdseye maps. Shouldnt it be vin the Maps area and I should be able to select it?

When I turn on the eTrex 30 the first thing its says is "Incompataible JNX file". What does that even mean?

Thanks
  • Incompatible JNX file means something has gone wrong as the .jnx files are the Birdseye files. You may want to try downloading the images again.

I hav ealready downloaded several Birdseye image maps to Basecap- none of them will show up on my Garmin. Even downloading it directly to the SD card wont work.

Do I need to reformat the card, eatase all BirdsEye images in vase camp and start all over agaon?

Why has GArmion made this so difficukt?
  • Well Garmin hasn't made anything difficult. BirdsEye generally downloads without issue. If none of yours are working something is probably wrong in your system somehow.

Can you confirm whether you're trying to download BirdsEye imagery or maps?

How are you attempting the download?

Can you see the imagery/map in Basecamp at all?

If so how are you transferring them to your Etrex?

I know you've hinted at some of this but just to check I understand your position correctly.

Thanks- I am getting frustrated, and Garmin is most often working well. I will check on a few things and repost in a few...

I use the Birdseye function in Basecamp to access subscriotion and download to computer, and the images (satelitte photos, NOT Birdseye topos) appear on Basecamp. None are "too big".

I then use the Transfer function in Basecamp to send it to my eTrex 30.

I send them to my micro SD card (32 GB Calss 10). That card has its own Garmin > Birdseye folder. I will try an attached a screen shot of what is in that foildder.

After I aparently successfully transfer, i eject the device, close Basecamp, and start Etrex 30. First thing it displays is "Invalid JNX file". (Makes no sense to me). Then Etrex works fine but no Sat photos.

    Thanks, Don

    attached a jpeg screenshot too.

Also, i cannot locate any Garmin .gpx or .jnx files on my compouter. Global search in Finder- nothing.. Maybe my Basecap setup is faulty? Maybe stuff is showing up in Basecamp (I can see the Birdseye sat coverage in Basecamp on my screen, even after closing and restarting BC), but something is wrong. Thanks Don.

Can I download Birdseye directly to eTrex 30 without Basecap. I just tried again using BC, and my device still says "Invalid JNX file" Even when i download to device internal memory or the microSD car in the device. What is "invalid" about a file I downloaded From Garmin website, though a Garmin software, to a Garmin device? It is all Garmin, right? Is the problem my SD card or my computer interface? This is all awfully frustrating and making the $30 Birdseye subscription useless to me.
I will now try downloading a non-Garmin / Birdseye map to Basecamp and then transfering THAT to the device. Id that works, then the issue must be with Birdseye-omly transfer...?

    Don

If Garmin support cannot fix a problem with their own devices and own software, then it will al be sent back, and not one good word will be said about them anywhere. Very frustrated with them right now. Makes no sense that a .jnx file from them will not work on one of there own devices.

Maybe my Birdseye subscription is not linked to my specific eTrex device (via serial numnber)? I followwd all the birdseye steps...
  • Well if it's not that would certainly explain the issue, what makes you suggest that? If they are downloaded to your mac they should be in the Basecamp folder in the JnxFiles subfolder, you seem to suggest you don't have any .jnx files in which case they haven't downloaded.

I thought of what may have gone wrong (in my head) , and if the SD card, etrex and Birdseye are all ok... then maybe subscription is bad. When I use Basecap to access and download Birdseye images, I noticed that the dialog window that lists my device has a padlock icon. Might that be it? Also, within Basecamp, do I need to sign in to My Garmin first. I would think that if I can download sat images to Basecamp, that my subscription is valid. If so, then my eTrex device is locked or not linked... How did that happen?

I can see the .jnx files in Finder, inside the Garmin device. they have the .jnx extnsion, but the type of file syas Unix executable. It looks like the .jnx files are useable in Basecap, and are transfering OK to my device, but my device cannot see/use them. Why not?

This link seems like it may have helped: "How do I resolve the “Invalid JNX File” error on my outdoor or fitness device?"

I did what it said, ands till nothing is viewable on my device - even though it it visable in BC and I can see the .jnx files on my device memory...
  • I think your best bet is to contact Product Support

They'll be able to confirm if your subscription is valid.

i confirmed my subscription, and tech support told me on the phone today to do the "dlete Birdseye folder" routine. I did that, downloaded fresh Birdseye imagery, and... nothing. Same Invalid JNX file message.

Tech support via email sent the message below. Seems to have answered the "why", but still nothing useful on my me new Garmin device when it comes to Birdseye.

"Thank you for contacting Garmin International.

There is currently an issue with the latest version of BaseCamp on Mac downloading corrupt BirdsEye images. As of this time there isn't any way around it other than to remove all of the images and download them on a Windows computer. BaseCamp for Mac will be updated to fix this very soon but we do not have an ETA for it at this time.

  • There is an issue BirdsEye in BaseCamp 4.3.1 in which images downloaded to the device may be invalid. This will be fixed in the upcoming 4.3.3. Sorry for the inconvenience and sorry I didn't respond to this earlier. It was diagnosed and fixed late last week. Like Product Support, we can't give an ETA, but it should be soon.

I hesitate to give a work around that I haven't been able to try, but if someone really needs BirdsEye now, you should be able to set your computer's time to a non-daylight savings time (DST) time zone...oh like Arizona and it should work.
