Trying to delete files in Colorado 300

I have a Garmin Colorado 300 with a damaged display. Everything still works but of course I cannot see on the unit what functions I'm pressing. I want to erase all my saved locations and tracks before selling it or tossing it out. Basecamp seems to start doing it (deleting the files), but then they pop right back in when I reconnect the Colorado 300. I've tried deleting files in Finder. Same thing. It seems the files have to be deleted directly in the unit? Hope not. I cannot find a "reset" function from either Basecamp or the HTML file off the installation disc.

Help?
  • Empty the trash after you delete the GPX files.

Just tried it, and the files came back!

In Finder, the Garmin volume shows a GPX folder which has three folders: Archive, Current, Temp. I've deleted all the files in those folders, not deleting the folders, emptied trash, properly ejected the Garmin unit. Then when I reconnect, in Basecamp all my locations and tracks reappear! Where did they come from? So I delete them again in Basecamp thinking they're just residuals in the Basecamp app.

But then when I eject and reconnect, they still reappear!!

And in Finder, only the Current folder has a Current.gpx file that reappeared.

    What now?

I know that when deleting tracks on my Oregon 400, I have to go directory on GPS and delete the tracks. Basecamp has no effect on deleting files on Oregon 400 , and it may be the same on your GPS.

That's probably the case for the Colorado 300 too.

However, it's weird that I can delete using BaseCamp the Archive and Temp folders in the GPX folder (in the Colorado 300's volume). And they stay deleted in the device. Gone. Those items don't come back when ejected and reconnected.

Also, while deleting a Waypoint or a Track that's stored in the device (using BaseCamp) the icon (in BaseCamp) turns as a little working wheel for several seconds — as if it's writing over something in the device. This is supposed to be a good sign that BaseCamp can do something.

    But no.

I've now parted ways with my Colorado 300 that still contains the Waypoints of my home, my office, my parent's house, plus several of my last ridden routes. It's a huge poor design.
  • Older outdoor units (and all current PNDs) require you to delete the data using the device. However, all devices have a master reset that should delete all data. I don't know how to do that on the Colorado (each device can be slightly different), but product support does...or that info might already exists on the internet.
