Retrieve track data from GPS?

Some years ago I could download track data to BC from my nüvi 1490 - but now I don't find any newer data than some from 2011!

I try to follow the instructions http://www8.garmin.com/learningcenter/training/basecamp/, but it seems not to work as advertised(?)

I should add that I receive some message(s) concerning Problem-Communicating-With-Device, maybe that's why??

The (standard) trip log in the 13xx/14xx models is stored in the

    \GPX\current.gpx

file but it is not unusual for it to be corrupt. You can try importing that file into BC but it may give an error.

Older (archived) trip logs are stored in GPX files in the

    \GPX\Archive

folder. You can try importing those too.

Personally I use this hack to record trip logs and the files have always been ok.

PS: It is possible to recover trip/track log data from GPX files but it is very tedious and time consuming. I wasted many hours doing it before I came across the above hack.

    Very useful information, indeed! :o

So far I wasted almost an entire day, attempting to import that wretched .gpx file into BC - I'll give the hack a try later today.
  • If your .gpx files are indeed corrupted it will be worth deleting all .gpx files in the GPX folder. Your nuvi will recreate the necessary ones when you next switch it on.

I'd save any corrupted GPX file(s) currently on your unit. Some kind person (not me right now :)) might be willing to fix them for you.

    - I don't (quite) understand how to arrive at 'the "Speed" indicator', could you elaborate a bit?

Meanwhile I tried the 'G7toWin' (on a Windows laptop), but apparently I have insufficient RAM to open the appropriate .gpx-file: The process runs OK to begin with, but later slows down and finally comes to a complete halt.

You probably won't have much luck opening corrupted GPX files in any software (Garmin or 3rd party).

GPX files are in XML format which is human readable text. To fix them one uses a text editor to manually correct the problems. As I said before this is very very tedious and time consuming especially with large files. I would not attempt it without a good editor (I use UltraEdit), knowledge (of XML), and patience.

On the map page (that you normally use while driving) press on the speed field at the bottom right of the screen.

    - got it! (Thought it was in BC) :o

I have now deleted the files from the unit - and (being highly optimistic) I have even saved a copy..
When I look at the 'Archive' folder contents, it strikes me that there is one big (242 MB) file, created in 2011, 'changed' two days ago (last time I used the device) - in addition there are 10 - 15 smaller (2 - 3 MB) ones from 2010.
So apparently nothing from the intervening time period was recorded(?), although the unit has been in frequent use.

It is possible the memory in your unit was filled preventing further logs from being saved. I routinely clear out the Archive folder to prevent that from happening.

    - I think so. In the future I'll follow your example

A couple of hours ago I took the unit on a circuit in our neighborhood - back home I could download the track (= 'trip log'?) via BC and view it on the map, just great!

BTW: Wouldn't it be nice if some kind of warning was given, when data logging capacity is (about to be) exceeded? Alternatively automatic clearing of old(est) track data to make room for newer(?)
