De-cluttering Import List Nav5/Zumo

Hi there.

Would of posted this under the specific device type, but I couldnt find a sub-forum for automobile devices.

I assume much like the Zumo units, when you import a route from Basecamp the file first loads into an "Import" list on the GPS and from here is loaded into the Routes. It seems that every file import from Basecamp is permanently kept in that "Import" list on the GPS. How do you clean up this list?

Thanks!
  • Basecamp sends data to your zumo etc in a file named temp.gpx which is placed in the GPX folder on the GPS. You need to delete that file.

As you've discovered, there are no forums for devices like the zumo, nuvi etc ... although they are frequently requested. This is being looked into but what the result will be I don't know.

In addition to SUSSAMB's good advice, here's a tip about the import process. I find that the import list on my zumo 660 can be very confusing and difficult to use on the bike. For example, if you transfer a new version of an existing route, the GPS appends a "1" to the name. If it's a long name, you may never see the "1" and load the wrong, old version. And routes are not always in alpha order.

To fix all of these issues, I start by deleting temp.gpx and clearing the import list. Then I export routes from BC to a folder on the SD card. I use My Data to import them as needed, then delete them later. The import list in internal memory stays blank. And I can manipulate file names and display routes in various orders on the SD card. For example, putting routes for my next trip in a folder named AAA puts them at the top of the list, in alphabetical order (unfortunately, the folder name does not display). And if a route gets munged by a recalc, it is very easy to find it and import a fresh, untouched copy on the fly.

I've tried deleting the temp.gpx file already via the folders in the Nav5, and that didnt work. After deleting it, GPS was turned on and the cluttered list still present. When I went into the GPS file folders, the temp.gpx file was there, so where is the GPS getting that List from?

I loaded up 1 route to test if temp.gpx would be re-created on the GPS unit via the import process, and it was, however with only that route information I loaded looking at the file using text editor -the previous, cluttered temp.gpx file had the mess of all the previously loaded routes in it. You mean delete the file from the Basecamp folder on the comp (btw, I run Mac)?

    Thanks!
  • Did you empty the trash?

(and no, no need to delete anything off Basecamp, that's not the issue)

DANHAM, any idea why after adding the SD card when you eject the GPS it automatically reconnects each time?

A stupid bug which seems not fixable by Garmin and also exist in the Montana, zumo390 and .... I have even created a video about this for Garmin, but it stays in the devices. Probably the test the devices on Mac's, always without microSD card and/or never eject them (properly).

For the Mac, us the free program JaVaWa Device Manager to clear en disable the trash bin in the zumo and microSD card forever (in Extra menu). Use his tool CleanEject placed on your desktop to eject devices better (read the text on his website about the unmountme.txt file)

If the JaVaWa Device manager does not recognize your zumo in the first place, then change the Mass Storage settings, see this video how to

Marco has it right. Be aware that I've never had problems ejecting the card and the GPS and unplugging just prior to them trying to remount.
