Question saving data - device or memory card

I have a etrex30, I believe it has 2 GB memory. I have a SD card with 4 GB memory.

When I open Garming Base Camp and connect my gps two drives open in the window. My device and "Maps" which is my SD card.

My question, which device should i save my waypoints to and why?

I feel saving waypoints to the GPS would be better than saving to my sd card "Maps" because it would avoid duplicate data.
  • I save all my data to the card, and keep my Etrex as clean as possible. That way should anything corrupt it's relatively easy to correct if on the card, and if I'm out and the Etrex won't boot because of a corrupted file I can simply remove the card and still have a working GPS.

On my Oregon 450 (somewhat similar to the eTrex models) I keep some Topo 24K maps (of my local area) in internal memory but keep the rest on a 32GB card.

As for waypoints (or other data) I copy GPX files manually to internal memory. I see no reason to use the card at all.

    Thanks for the reply.

I guess it doesn't really matter. It seems it is just preference on what and where I store my data.

StuartMW, when you copy Topo 24 maps to your card, are you copying selections or the entire Topo 24 Disk? When you do copy, what program are you using to copy the Topo to the memory card? Do you also have Birdseye on the same card and, if so, are you able to see the BirdsEye/Topo overlaid on each other (when both are on the memory card).
    Thanks in advance.
