basecamp not transferring gpx to Garmin 705

I have been sent a gpx file, which I opened up in basecamp. I connected my Garmin 705 to my Macbook Air and went through the basecamp routing for transferring the file to my 705 - nothing ... anyone any idea why this didn't work?

thanks

Martin
  • Is your "garmin 705" a nuvi 705? Does the GPX file contain a track or a route? If it is a nuvi, and the gpx file is a route, did you do the "Tools > My Data > Import route from file" process? If it is a nuvi and the GPX file contains a track, there is no support on a nuvi for track import.

    Sorry, it's an Edge 705.

    Hello Martin.

With your Edge705 connected to your computer just copy the gpx file and paste it into your GPX folder on the 705.

Disconnect > Turn on 705 > Menu > Where To? > Saved Rides > you should see the gpx file you pasted.

so there is no way of transferring an imported gpx file from basecamp to my Garmin Edge 705? That's weird.

Also, going to the hardware issue - my 705 decides that when going through the process you suggested to switch itself off half way during the process of bringing up the route. Any ideas why this happens?

    thanks

    Hello Martin,

The fact that BaseCamp would not send that GPX file to your 705 might be because the file is corrupt somehow.

That would also explain why your 705 shuts off when you try to use the file after pasting it in.

Does BaseCamp show the file as a Track or a Route?

Attach a copy of that GPX file here and someone will check it.

I submitted your file to this XML Validator site and it seems valid.

I also checked it in my own software (UltraEdit) and it seems ok in that too.

FYI the file contains one track ("MALVERNS_150") and 9 waypoints.

PS: It opens fine in MapSource 6.15.11 too.

    Hello Martin,

The problem with your file was there are no Timestamps.
Fitness devices like Edge and Forerunner cannot use GPX files that do not have timestamps.

I ran your file thru GPSies.com and converted it to a GPX with fake Timestamps.
It should transfer to your 705 using BaseCamp or manually copy and paste into your 705.

Looks like a track for a race?
