BaseCamp Mac versus Windows

Currently working on my next vacation, I prepare Routes and Tracks (hiking and biking).
My problem: On windows using drawing tools, when I reach the edge of the map windows, BC shows a large arrow and the map move to let draw outside of the current windows. On the Mac, when I reach the limit of the map windows, nothing, I have to take the hand moving tool, move the map, select the drawing tool again, but I cannot resume previous track segment, I have to start another one... later I can join them but it's poor design. Let me know what I am missing BC Mac cannot be that poor.
On top of that I experiences crashes several time a day, with no major data losses. If I report problems thru dialog window, can I expect a feedback?
  • To temporarily use the hand tool, hold the spacebar down, move the map and then let go. You should now be back in track draw mode.

To your earlier point, when I switch to the hand tool manually and then switch back to the track tool, my track drawing resumes where it left off. Are you hitting ESC at some point? If so, don't.

As for crash reports, we cannot respond to them individually, but every release we tackle the highest occurrence cases. So when you report, it increases the chance of your issue being fixed. The other thing that increases the chances are an explanation of the steps leading up to the crash, especially if it is repeatable.

    Thanks that works fine.
The "funniest" crash: Crashes while saving data when closing BC, often when zooming or panning. But it works so much faster on Mac.

Are you saying BC on your MAC crashes when zooming or panning? I don't think the current version has ever crashed on any of the three Mac that I use with BC. In fact, I can remember the last version that had a crash. If you can find a set of actions that crashes consistently I bet the crash report will reveal data corruption of maps or other files.

Yes, Mac-BC has significant problems especially running on Mavericks OS and when used with a Retina Display and a Second Display. Zooming and Panning often will cause Mac-BC to crash: among other operations.

And no, it's not corrupted data.
  • There is an issue we are chasing right now pertaining to zooming and panning and finding on slower machines...which includes most laptops. We don't know of any crash caused when using the Retina display with a second display. We do know of some layout issues that occur when you move BaseCamp from the Retina display to the second non-retina display.

And you'll notice I didn't use the word "crash" with reference to the Retina Display problems. ;)

    I use an elderly MacBook.
This explains why I don't like Basecamp very much!

It's too difficult to operate and slow too, and I have to use too many controls. BikeHikeUK is very easy to use and all I need is the track pad and clicky pad. BC needs controls - space bar and cursor arrows for example.

    Thanks,
    Mick.

    Just another problem:
When displaying a set of waypoints/POI, BaseCamp on PC and On Mac do not use the same algorithm to sort item.
On the BaseCamp PC the sort ignore the case.
On BaseCamp Mac upper and lower case are used to generate the sort.
Is there a way to make the MAC BC ignore the case of the letter?
Is that a PC/MAC difference or a BC PC / BC Mac difference.
    Your help will be appreciated.
  • This seems to just be a bug on the Mac side. We'll get that fixed.

    Hello to everyone.

The "backup and restore" feature of version 4.2.4 of BC does not work on my Mac OSX 10.9 (2GHz Intel Core2 Duo - 4GB RAM): it only happens to me? I had to go back to version 4.1.2 because I do not know how else to save the data structure.

Thank you so much for all your answer
