URGENT: Lost data in BaseCamp 4.2.4 for Mac

I have a lot of data in Basecamp (lists with waypoints & routes) as well as folders with lists of waypoints & routes).
Now I have experienced VERY strange behaviour of BaseCamp:
When I import a GPX-file, lots of lists are disappeared!!
That's not how it has to be, of course.
I've made a backup, and restored from the backup: all the lists are present.
But importing a new GPX-file: again lots of lists disappeared!!
Stressing...!
I don't know what to do.
Please, advise.

  • Does this happen with any GPX file or just one? If just the one you already tried, perhaps it is corrupted.

    Hello Wim,

I do not have a Mac so this is just a guess.

I use BaseCamp but have never experienced your particular problem so I have no specific advise to fix it.

On my PC, when I have software that does not perform like I know it should, the first thing I do is uninstall it completely and re-install a fresh copy.

If you do re-install then you might try importing some GPX files using the fresh install without all your other files in there to make sure the program is working correctly.
Then bring in your backup data and see what happens.
Maybe there is some kind of corruption in the backup file??

I just remembered, several years ago I updated BaseCamp and it got installed on my backup hard drive E:/ instead of C:/.
It worked but very slow and all of my files were missing because it was a fresh install so I had to use my backup to restore my files which seemed strange but I ignored it.
Obviously I was not paying attention when the installer showed me the path during the update.
After a month or so something made me check the desktop icon path and saw that the program was running off E:/.

So.....check the path your BaseCamp is running from.

Well, it seems to happen to all GPX files I import...
    See both attachments.
First you see my holidays 2004 and 2005.
Then I import 4848007_A Blaricum.gpx and the holidays ar GONE!
    Please, help.
  • Have you tried the uninstall/reinstall as sugested? If not then I think you'll need to wait for one of the Basecamp developers to swing by ... it's certainly an unusual problem.
  • Take a look in Library/Application Support/Garmin/BaseCamp in your home directory. Apple has probably translated the names into Dutch, but something like that should be there. If you don't know how to get into Library, which Apple tries to hide from normal users, do a Google search. That's where BaseCamp keeps its files. I'd try importing something new, looking at what new files are created or changed, and then doing whatever it is you're doing to lose the listing. Are the new files still there? Unfortunately, BaseCamp seems to store things in a binary format, so corruption is definitely a possibility, and I don't know what you can do about it if that's the problem. BaseCamp may not have a way of rebuilding databases. And since the problem you describe may be due to disk problems, I'd run /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility (again, the names may have been translated but it'll be there), and check the drive where your home folder is. If you find something wrong, you may have to boot from the Recovery Partition (Google is your friend) to fix it. Reinstalling the application itself is probably a waste of time.
  • Don't reinstall BaseCamp and don't mess with the files in the Library!

What is happening is by design I believe... BaseCamp/Mac creates a temporary folder for the items when you import a file; unless you rename that folder manually it will be removed upon the next import (the routes/tracks/waypoints it contains won't be removed)

So the solution is to rename the folders with the white rectangle in the folder icon before you import something else.

    Thanks SCHINDER,

I saw a lot of junk in this folder (see attachment) and throw everything out except database 4.2.
    But still there's my problem.

I never had this problems in MapSource... :-)

    What I did today:

I exported 2 gdb-files from Mapsource (Win) and imported them in BaseCamp Mac.

    Attached your see the results:

    - imported '03 ALLE ROUTES SCANDINAVIA.gdb'
    then
    - imported '2013 camper Scandinavia.gdb': SUDDENLY '03 ALLE ROUTES SCANDINAVIA.gdb' totally disappeared!!!

Well, I don't like to go back to MapSource, but BaseCamp seems to be unstable to me...
    What's wrong? https://forums.garmin.com/images/icons/icon8.png

    Please Garmin, advise!

    Thanks JAVAWA,

    That's the solution! Great!!
There is really a little white rectangle in the icon of the imported file that disappears after renaming the file.
    Crazy solution, of course....
But from now on nothing is lost anymore!!

  • I find it amazing that it's been designed like that. Note amazed, not surprised!

Glad I use the Windows version.

Whoa, whoa! I never told you to throw away things in ~/Library! That's exactly why Apple hides it from normal users. People kept throwing things out because "I don't know what this is or what it does and don't want it on my computer" and then complain when their apps no longer work! I was curious whether the files stayed put or were being deleted by something else, that's all. You should never muck around in ~/Library unless you know what you're doing.
