Finding address in uk and France

Hi There
Having recently purchases an apple Imac and loaded my lifetime maps update. I find Basecamp frustrating after a few years using MapSource. It may be me, and I know I need to get use to it. I can't seem to put in an address in the UK or a post code which is what the 65 million UK people use to find places like your Zip code in the States.

I also found a post where a guy was trying to find a place in France as I am trying to plan a trip there this summer also and you said press ctrl + alt +F then enter the address in the box. I tried this and nothing. Do I need to activate a UK address finding code to. I know about 5 people having the same problems. Finding address to start and end a journey is the key to planning trips. P:(lease help me get the basics.

I could use the old computer and MapsSource but with no support it has a limited life. So I need to sort this out before I resort to putting my head in the oven and end it all.

Cheers Tony
  • Basecamp works with UK postcodes, at least on my Windows version it does. You should just be able to put the postcode into the search box top left and hit enter. This assumes of course you have the CN EU map selected in Basecamp?

French addresses are a bit tricky as often they are different to what may be in the CN EU map, although I've generally been able to find them. Again you need to ensure you have the CN EU map selected and often entereing less detail is better than trying the full address. Are you able to give some examples that you can't get to work?
  • Can you provide an example address?

And my mistake, it's top right the box.

...I know where the town is and have it in the center on the screen. I have set the find radius to 100 miles and put the house number, road name, town and post code in and it takes me to off the map way to the left Brazil way, yes Brazil direction.

Help please the oven still looks inviting

You might be putting too much information into the box. Usually, with BaseCamp searches less is more. Try just slowly typing in the road name and watch what pops up as you type or just put part of the road name in and search on that.
  • Provided you know it's Pons 17 Basecamp picks it up straight away. Ctrl + Alt + F. Type Pons in the location box and select Pons 17 from the drop down list. Enter 25 Rue Des Jacobins in the search box. Up it pops :)

What I can't fathom though is the rest of the list, as there appear to be closer matches that aren't listed

Further, Mapsource doesn't find that address even if I use the full 5 figure code for Pons that Basecamp provided :)
  • As I pointed out, it works fine on my Windows version. The mac version I know is different, but to answer your questions (the mac may be different):

    1. I selected the various other Pons first, but it was Pons 17 that worked. In Mapsource it didn't even give any options and couldn't find the address even when I put in the 5 figure code.
    2. Ctrl + Alt + F to bring up the Find options box, also avilable in the drop down list under Find in the top line
    3. Mac clearly different from Windows.
    4. Yes, but select Find Options (if there is one) (see point 2). Then ensure address is selected and not something else.
    5. Yes

Forget the Control+Alt+F, the search entry is top RIGHT and should be on your menu bar by default. Since we can't see what you are doing I can only tell you that I put in your search address as you wrote it above and the first hit I received was the address in Pons.
  • Thanks Dan, hopefully that nails it for the OP :)

I doubt it is Mavericks that is the problem. I'm on Mavericks too. If it were me I would delete the Map file and reinstall both BaseCamp and the Map. Don't worry, deleting and reinstalling BaseCamp will not delete your data.

It's OK - Mac OS 10.9 (Mavericks) is the problem!

Here I have a posting in the german GARMIN-Forum ->
    https://forum.garmin.de/showthread.php?23386-Adressen-suchen-unter-basecamp-f%FCr-Mac
    ... it's post # 16

Searching in basecamp windows or mac is not that different. But, the maps must be installed on the computer and not used from the gps! If you use the City Navigator maps from the gps, then first use Garmin Express to install the map again, but choose in the advanced options to install the map to the computer only (stays also on the gps).

After that searching is like this: number streetname place [province] country

You may use comma, but not needed. if you search a place first, then like this: placename country

Province is optional, but can help. try to search berlin berlin deu if you are in uk op the map. Try to search only the streetname if you have centered the map on the town its in. Seaching is always from the center of the map based on name, unless you direct basecamp to a specific country and province. Type in horse and everything with horse in the name comes up. Type hotel, all with name hotel and the category hotel from the center of the map.

A workaround is this video, google map search to basecamp in a few clicks: http://youtu.be/5y_wRKOw-qg
