how to convert .img to .gmap

Hi,

I have 3 maps using the .img extension, which mapInstall doesn't recognized, therefor I cannot see them in the map menu in basecamp... I've tried converting them using JaVaWa but the software requires a .tdb file which I don't have. The maps work great on the montana600 but I'd like to see them in basecamp.

Is Map converter my only option?

Thanks a lot!

Yann
  • Your IMG maps are already compiled for your Montana. Load them on your SD Card, plug your Montana into the computer and open BaseCamp. If your maps are not read (it takes a while) by BaseCamp, then download JaVaWa Device Manager and with BC closed and your Montana plugged into the computer run JaVaWa DM you can select your maps and set them to be visible in BaseCamp. The Help will guide you.

Thanks for your answer, but it's not working... well, not really! :)

    What I did is :
1-copy the 4 .img files in the garmin directory of the montana. Connect, open basecamp, no map in BC neither on the montana. deleted the files.

2-closed BC, started javawa, and installed the maps. Good! Maps can be used on the montana! Then closed javawa. open BC, still no map. closed BC, reopened javawa and modified the map status so it can be seen in BC. Close javawa, opened BC, a new directory appeared under the montana and it loaded the maps. Clicked on the first and it shown the map perfectly. The other 3 ones didn't show what their supposed to and the fourth wasn't even in the map list. Their names was also wrong, but it's ok, as it was written in the javawa help guide... Closed BC and remodified the maps status so it cannot be seen in BC.

3-copied the 4 maps on a sd card, clicked on the sd card logo in BC and the maps do not appear.

Part of my problem is fixed as I can now see my maps on the montana.

What I want to do is use the maps in basecamp, I want to select the maps in the map menu in BC. Do I need to purchase a microSD, copy the maps on that card, put it in the montana, connect it and open BC? Why can't I see the maps if they're in the garmin directory on the montana?? Why does map manager (or map install) can't see my maps?

    Thanks for your time!

ok, I can see the maps in the map menu, not only under "montana600" on the left, but the maps still don't show what their supposed to...in fact they show nothing... and one map still doesn't appear in the menu, even if it is set to in javawa.

forgot to say that javawa detects errors in 2 maps, something about segment numbers exists in other files....

First, you never told us where you acquired your maps. Are they from OSM? It would appear that two of your maps have the same "tiles/segments" in them and this causes problems with the Montana and therefore BaseCamp. You might consider combining these two maps into one, therefore removing the duplicate map tiles.

You don't have to put maps on an SD Card as long as you have sufficient internal storage on the Montana.

    Hi Dan,

I've aquired the maps at my job; I work as a power lineman and we have different paths in different powerlines and I wanted to have those maps working in basecamp to analyze the topo before going moutain sledding...

Ok for the SD card and memory storage.

How could I combine the 2 maps? Do I need a software?

thanks a lot for your time!

Unless you have access to the map tiles(segments) that were used to make up the two map you can not combine them. Having duplicate segments in maps on the Montana can cause problems. I would suggest checking with your company's GIS department to see if you can get the map area you are interested in compiled into one map. Or, you could go to OSM to obtain the map area you want and this site will compile them for you and send you a download link. Of course these maps will not have any of your companies info on them but you will have maps for the area you want and you can download the Mac install file.
