Feature Request - Additional Activities

Please add additional activity profiles to Basecamp to make it easier to plan and record routes, trips and tracks to accommodate canoeing and kayaking. None of the profiled activities seem to allow proper function when traveling on streams and lakes, or planning trips thereon.
thanks.
  • It seems that direct routing is the correct activity for water navigation. You can always make a custom activity "Kayaking" based on Direct.

So are the "Inland Lakes" maps compatible with BaseCamp?

    This is a disappointing response.

If the "direct" route is over land, then it's certainly not the "correct activity for water navigation".

For example, I'm planning a canoe trip on Fontana Lake (NC), which was created by the construction of Fontana Dam and flooding a mountain valley. The resulting lake has many, many "fingers" extending up countless side valleys. Waypoints are numerous cemetaries that mark where towns once stood.

The "direct" (i.e., over land) distance between two waypoints can be very short. But unless I want to carry or drag my canoe over a mountain "as the crow flies", many miles of paddling separate the waypoints by water.

    Same for meandering streams.

Canoeists and kayakers would like to be able to calculate the *over water* routes and paddling distances (and therefore times) between waypoints, and it would be nice if Base Camp could assist with that.
  • BaseCamp does not do on-water route calculation. You can however use direct routes with shaping points to make a route that does pretty much whatever you want. Though there are many ways to do it, one is use the routing tool to follow the water "correctly" between the waypoints you want to visit. You could also create a direct route with your waypoints and then Option-click and drag the legs to create the path you desire.

I'm not familiar with the product, but have you looked into using Homeport? It's our current marine navigation application.

Ha, shows you what I know. Ignore my response and listen to azdrmn. Homeport doesn't do marine navigation.
