Routing Tool ends after switching tools (Basecamp,Mac Lion)

I often plan long motorcycle trips across the country on specific roads and routes. In the old days when working properly, if I was using the routing tool, I could switch tools such as the Hand for moving the map or the Magnifying Glass to zoom and then switch back to the routing tool with no issue.
The routing tool always kept the long attached vector rubber band as you plotted the route. In the past you could hit the escape button to end the route. Now, if I select any other tool while creating a route, the route ends at the last selected point.

Yes I can use the direction arrows at the bottom to move the map or the +/- to zoom in or out, but the old way was far easier especially planning back roads and lunch stops. I know I can also use the beginning and ending route method such as NY to LA with shortest distance, however I'm trying to build custom routes over weeks of travel.

Keeping the routing tool "On" while switching tools is by far the easiest way.

I have contacted support at Garmin several times and was told their version works perfectly fine and have never heard of this issue of loosing route when switching across tools.

Appreciate anyone who can advise the problem or solution.

(Running newest updated versions both Mac and Garmin)
  • When you switch back to the routing tool just hover over the final point until you see a black circle, click and you're away again.
  • Using BC 4.2.2 on my iMac I have the same problem as RPSCOTT. Hovering over the final point does nothing, but clicking with the routing tool =appears= to continue the route, but in fact creates a new one with the last point as the starting location. Do this three times and you have three routes, not one. Yes, you can drag and combine them in the Info window, but what a PITA. Not good.

  • Sounds like an issue with the latest mac release?

Windows advice in a Mac forum? The two apps are not even remotely the same.

Agreed. It seems like every new "feature" breaks something existing. I have the same issue and but there is a less than elegant workaround. Once the route tool becomes inactive (the route is closed or finished by BaseCamp prematurely), double click on the route is the left pane to bring up the route properties box with the route tool selected. At this point the route will become "live" again, the route tool will be selected and you can continue. PITA but workable.
  • Thank you for the workaround. I'm off to go see if this has changed in 4.2.3.

Certainly better than how I was working with the situation. I can live with that. At least one good thing with that method is that I can now add on to an existing route. In the past if I wanted to extend an existing route, I would have to start over and include the new ending point. Still don't understand why Garmin got away from the old way of leaving the route tool on until you end it.

Kind of like "If you don't say No, it means Yes" logic in the programing. Appreciate all the help here. Glad I asked and thanks!
  • KILLTIMER's method works in 4.2.3, but the underlying flaw is still there.

This works great - I'm thankful for this option at least.
Now to figure out how-to/whether possible to join and/or split routes.
  • Yes it is, but I'm not sure how you do it on the mac version. On the PC version there is a 'Divide' tool, and by selecting the appropriate tracks, you can right click and select 'Join tracks'. That may or may not transfer to the mac version
