Can't crerate a simple route - Snaping to trails?

I an trying to get more use from my GPS than just logging where I have been - but I have always struggled with creating routes in basecamp vs the old MapSource!

I am trying to create a route in a Colorado State Park - Garmin thinks it knows best by having the route tool snap to the trail? I know that I can change activity and use DIRECT (vs. Mountain Bike) to stop this - but in my case I am following two GPS tracks form previous rides to make a new ride and in some cases the actual trail is much different than the one in Garmin has posted.

So whats happening is - I would like to use the Mountain Bike Activity, but also have the ability (with a key or something) to STOP the SNAP, draw the actual off-trail section of the route and then go back to snapping?

Seems such a simple request - I assume that somewhere there is a keyboard short to allow me to do this?

Please advise!

Chris
  • I'm not clear what you're asking. If you create a direct route it's direct. It will only recalculate and 'snap back' if you tell it to.

If you want a route combining different activity settings you can now do that in v4.2.2

Create a route linking the 2 routes you mention. Open the route properties and highlight where you want to change to 'Direct'. On the right hand side click the bottom icon (looks like a clock). Edit the via point activity to direct. Then do the same again for all the other points that you want to use Direct routing
  • Well - when BC creates a route and snaps to an existing trail - it looks pretty on the screen and when posted to the GPS it doesn't have enough markers and it is virtually unusable - is some cases cutting off 1/2 (or more) miles of switch back trails and other corners?

Can I just turn off snapping altogether?
Other than snapping - what else does setting an activity do?

    SUSSAMB,

I did what you said and it worked like a charm after I recalculated the mixed route. Now if my Oregon 450 will let me navigate it with out converting to pure hiking (on the road) or pure direct (off the road).
