Routes/Waypoints Will Not Upload To GPS

I cannot upload routes and waypoints from my Mac computer using Basecamp 4.2.2.0 to my BMW Navigator IV [Zumo 660] GPS running 4.90 software.

With City Navigator North America NT 2014.1 checked in the "Map" menu, I create and Save the waypoints and routes using Basecamp and they show up in "Lists" under "On MY Computer". I connect the GPS using a USB cable. It takes almost a minute, but eventually the GPS will be listed under "My Garmin Devices" Below the GPS listing there is a Folder, "Maps" which shows TWO maps: 1. City Navigator North America NT 2014.1, and City Navigator North America NT 2014.1 3D US & Canada.

Here is how I am trying to Send Routes and Waypoints To the GPS and what happens when I do:

1. I select the List containing the Route and Waypoints I want to Send to the GPS.
2. I push the "Send To Device" button.
3. A "Garmin GPS Transfer" dialog box appears which shows the GPS's name.
4. I click the "Routes" and the "Waypoints" buttons.
5. Press "Send"
6. A new message appears saying the Routes were created on a map not installed on the GPS and asking whether or not I want to "Recalculate". [I've tried both "Recalculate" and not recalculating and it doesn't make a difference in the outcome!]
7. For this example, I press "Recalculate" and a progress bar appears showing the route recalculating with the various route-segments appearing above the progress bar.
8. The Progress bar reaches the end and then the "Garmin GPS Transfer" box re-appears saying "Transfer Complete".
9. Close the "Garmin GPS Transfer" box.
10. Click on the GPS in Basecamp "My Garmin Devices"
11. A new GPS window opens below the "On My Computer" and a list of the named GPS's contents appears showing the Routes and Wapoints I am attempting to Transfer.
12. Eject the GPS using "Eject" on Basecamp File Menu.
13. Shutdown and Restart GPS [Start Up appears normal!]
14. Click Where To>Favorites on GPS. Result: ""No Data Available"
15. Try Tools>My Data: Result: No Routes or Waypoints listed.
16. Try Where To>Custom Routes: Result: No Routes are Available. Create a new Route?

I've got literally hours invested in trying to figure out how "Send" routes and waypoints To the GPS. I must be insane because I keep doing the same thing over and over again, including re-watching the various Tutorials, and I keep hoping for a different result, which never occurs!

Obviously, I'm missing something! If you have suggestions please pass them along ASAP while I still have a little residual sanity left!

Could it be that Basecamp is corrupted? I just updated to 4.2.2.0. Could the GPS be bad? I've tried both USB outlets on my Mac. Perhaps I should try a different USB cable, but then the GPS is recognized by Basecamp! I dunno what to do. This should be a simple process!

Thank you all of you Garmin/Basecamp-therapists out there! I definitely need therapy!
  • From your explanation, it's obvious you know what you are doing. Does you Zumo function correctly for everything except transfer? I would do a hard reset on the Zumo, create a few new waypoints and just drag one waypoint on top of the Zumo for a test. Two things that sounds odd, the Zumo telling you "Routes were created on a map not installed on the GPS" and the zoom taking a minute to appear. First time BC is indexing the maps on the Zumo for use in BaseCame but the GPS mounts in BC and you have progression bars for maps. Once my Nuvi boots into computer mode it mounts in BC almost instantly. Do you have
CN NT 2014.1 installed on your computer?

I do not have a Zumo but the Nuvi 3597 mounts three maps in BC:
    North America DEM
City Navigator North America NT 2014.10
    CN North America NT 2014.10

    Under BC Maps, I have
City Navigator North America NT 2013.40
City Navigator North America NT 2014.10
City Navigator North America NT 2014.10

If the Nuvi is connected and

City Navigator North America NT 2013.40
City Navigator North America NT 2014.10

If the Nuvi is not connected.

The Zumo experts will be up soon and maybe someone will have a solution.
  • Thank you, Therapists!

As soon as I can summon-up the courage to face the routing/waypoint Transfer Demons again, I'll give your suggestions a try. Really, I just need to finish my morning coffee, then I'll try your suggestions and see what happens!

Thanks for the help, I really appreciate it!

    I'll report back.
  • Ok, Master Therapists, I tried your suggestions . . . and . . . whadaya know . . . they worked!

The Garmin FAQ Support Info was especially helped where it says that when you "Click" on Import Routes [or Import Waypoints] there will be no indication the GPS is doing anything . . . for maybe as long as several minutes [and indeed it did take several minutes for the Routes/Waypoints to show up on the GPS after pressing "Import"]. But absent the "head's up" how is one supposed to know you need to wait? I do not remember any reference to this "Import" procedural extra step in either the Basecamp Tutorials or in my GPS Owners Manual.

As a contrast, when I connect my 10 year old Garmin 2730 GPS to the computer and Send Routes/Waypoints to it from Basecamp: First, I get immediate messages on the GPS screen indicating data is being transferred; and then second, a message saying the data transfer is complete. Transfers to the 2730 are lightning-quick occurring usually in a matter of literally seconds. With my BMW Navigator IV [Zumo 660] there's no indication of data being transferred, and then later when I Import the Route, for example, it takes minutes to Import just one route [I timed 6 minutes to Import/Recalculate one cross country route vs. 5 or 6 SECONDS for the same route in the old out-of-date 2730!].

    What's frustrating about this:

I'm an experienced Garmin GPS user and fairly new Basecamp user and I followed the available instructions for both Basecamp and my GPS, but the instructions left out the nuances of the process, such as: No indication the Navigator GPS is receiving Data; The need to "Import" the routes/waypoints as a separate step in Navigator GPS import process; The excessively lengthy time it takes to "Import" routes into the Navigator GPS [6 minutes for one route]; The fact none of the preceding issues were problems with my out-of-date/out-of-production Garmin 2730's; The fact that my 2730's do just about everything faster and easier and definitely more intuitively than the "state of the art" BMW Navigator IV [Zumo 660] and my Zumo 550 as well, and finally the fact that neither the 2730 nor the 2730's operating software are no longer available.

Sorry for the Thread-creep but I have been wrestling with this for days trying to figure out how to transfer routes and waypoints to my GPS, I followed the instructions, and now I find out I missed a seemingly simple step. Did I miss the step or was it not even included in the instructions? This process shouldn't be so "nuanced". It never was in the past.

Again, thank you Master Therapists. I'm on my way back to sanity thanks to your help but I still have a ways to go [my Navigator GPS is still s-l-o-w-l-y plodding along importing several routes! For almost 20 minutes now]!
  • Ok, great! Sounds like the Holy Grail of something is on Page 29 of the Zumo 660 Manual. I'll check page 29 in my BMW Navigator IV Manual tomorrow. I can feel it . . . Enlightenment is close . . . the secrets of the universe are about to be revealed on Page 29!

Thanks for the reference I'll check it out.
  • Well you did quote the Zumo 660 in your first post so I'm hoping the manual might help :)
