  • Unless I've completely misunderstood how they should work, user created profiles (shortest/fastest etc.) still can't be used to recalculate routes. Only the default Driving, Motorcycling etc will recalculate. What's point of having user created profiles that can't be used in a "what if" comparison process?
  • Edit, the link is now working for me.

The provided link http://www8.garmin.com/software/BaseCampforMac_422.dmg brings my browser in a 'loop', i.e. does not start the download but opens the site https://buy.garmin.com/nl-NL/NL/index.ep

Custom profiles are intended to allow you to do "what if" routing comparisons. You can change any route's profile, or the profile for individual legs and recalculate the route. One use is duplicating the route and then change it's profile to try out different routes side by side. Unless I'm missing something, it seems to be working as intended. One current challenge is the fact that all custom profiles carry its base activity's icon. We are looking into allowing you to change the icon on custom profiles.

When I create a route with a default activity, say "Driving". I can open the route properties box and change the activity to "Motorcycle". The route immediately recalculates with the Motorcycle activity. Automatically. If I have two custom activities based on "Motorcycle", one fastest, one shortest, and I create a route using one of them "Motorcycle Fastest" for this example, BaseCamp acts as expected. However, if I open the route properties and change the activity from "Motorcycle Fastest' to "Motorcycle Shortest" nothing happens. If I click on the recalculate icon BaseCamp appears to recalculate but does not change the activity to the one I've selected. If I select a default activity such as "Driving" the route is recalculated to Driving, I can toggle routes between "Driving", "Motorcycle" "Trucking" etc. in the route properties box and the route changes according to the selected activity.... But I can't get back to a user created activity. What am I doing wrong?

Creating multiple routes with thee or four different profiles is possible but on a 20 day trip results in a lot of confusion, and is a bit cumbersome. I'd hoped that the user created activities would work as the defaults.
  • I may be talking about something totally different, I can't find profiles in base camp but if you double click a route, the route info box, the Via Points tab, allows me to change activities for example from Driving to RV. The route recalculates as you change activities. If you open routing preferences and change from fastest to shortest, the route recalculates each time it changes. I think the routing dialog window needs to be open for BC to know which route to recalculate. What would be very helpful for me would be the ability to change routing preferences calculation Mode (fastest-shortest) from the dialog for the one route in question and leave the routing preference unchanged.

My bad. Wrong terminology. I should have called them "activities" not profiles. I've edited my post to correct.
  • I have never tried to manage/edit an activity. I don't understand the concept. If I manage/edit driving and edit preferences, I can change fastest to shortest but it appears to me is does not stick to driving. It is like I have went to Preference menu and changed it there. I am not saving mouse clicks, what am I missing.

I'll use my own setup for an example. I've created 4 different activities based on the default "Motorcycle" activity. "Touring Fastest" and " Touring Shortest" using the same map display options, route avoidances and road preferences, the only change being the fastest/slowest one. These two use all roads except trails and unpaved roads and the map display is set to show most POIs and options. "Motorcycle Scenic" which is a shortest route that does not use Interstates or Toll roads and stays off of unpaved roads, and Dual Sport which is a shortest using dirt and unpaved roads primarily, avoiding all divided highways Toll roads, Major Highways etc. Each has it's own map display settings, "Dual Sport" shows not much other than the lowest 3 road types , Hotels and Fuel stops. The touring options show no gravel roads or trails.

By using these I can easily check out route options depending on the riding I'll be doing in a given area. My annual motorcycle trip(s) comprise at least three different activities spread over multiple days covering thousands of miles. Planning takes months.
  • Thanks, excellent explantation, I totally missed the little + button to create activities. I was complaining about having to go to preferences to change fastest and shortest. I will make a driving fastest and driving shortest and be able to compare from the routing dialog window via tab. Very helpful. I plan almost as much for larger RVing trips. By the time I get done, I have so many url stored in BC, if the developer would add a slide show to BC, I could take a virtual turn and have no need to take the trip.
  • It is not working for me and I think it is what your (KillTimer) original post referenced. I made a Driving fastest and Driving Shortest activity. In the route window, via tab, If I select driving fastest activity and recalculate, BC calculates Driving nothing changes at the activity goes back to Driving. If I select RV, BC auto recalculates the route for RV activity. If I choose Driving Fastest for the drop down and recalculate the route (auto does not kick in), the RV route is calculated. Am I missing something or does BC 4.2.2 have a bug?
