Trip Planner

I am having trouble understanding the Add Hub button. When I add a hub the default start is the last stop on the trip and the trip home especially a multiple day trip is screwed up. What am I missing? What is the add hub for? The popup says new hubs are added to the end of the trip. Can anyone point to documentation on trip planner?

When creating a trip I usually us waypoints from MyCollection. It would be very helpful if I could view MyCollection and select waypoints for Trip Planner.

Thank
  • I think this has been reported but as you create a route in Trip Planner, a normal route with the trip name and date is added to your MyCollection. If you edit the route in trip planner or MyCollection, the changes occur in both places but you have to click around in Trip Planner before the changes are shown in Trip Planner.

Tip: Dragging the slide bar at the bottom of a route in trip planner is an excellent tool to see the towns/cites on you route. This information is not available on route direction I wish the directions had the nearest town listed in directions with distance to the nearest town.

In trip planner I selected a hotel as a destination for a 3 day trip one way. I received a dialog telling me I had selected a hotel and did I want it added to all routes (not exact wording). I assume instead of just putting me at a city overnight, BC would find lodging, I wonder if BC tries to select the same chain. Does anyone know how this option works?
  • Is it possible to drag or easily move a route from MyCollection to a day trip planner route? If not I have a feature request: Display MyCollection when creating a Trip route and allow me to drag or select waypoints or a route to use as a Trip Planner day route.

I think Garmin owns the Biker/geocaching market and I don't see much competition for the future but a much bigger market, auto/RV, will continue to see completion form smart phones, tablets. I think many people will continue to want a dedicated GPS for auto/RV travel if Garmin utilized BC to sell GPS's. It will be several years before cell phone data will have cost to cost coverage and even if you buy downloadable maps like Navigon, most people still want their smart phone on their side, not the windshield. BC in my opinion is key to capturing the auto/RV market. When Garmin makes a GPS that can easily accept a Trip without modification, I think you will start seeing many more RV/Auto users on the forum. I am waiting for a Nuvi 3579 LMTHD to arrive. BaseCamp is listed one time in the owners manual under compatible files.
  • Looks like when you create a Trip, for example a 3 day trip to arrives, BC puts 2 travel days in a hub. The arrival day and stay days are in a hub and the 3 days to get home is another hub. Still not seeing the need for a hub.
  • Ok I think I understand Hubs, if you add a hub to the original designation (default), BC puts the hub trip at the end of any open days. BC routes you to the added destination and recalculates the trip home from the added destination. Neat feature, maybe a youtube for trip planner would really help the average users. I think before the Bikers will start recommending Trip Planner to their Auto/RV friends, you will have to integrate it better with MyCollection to give user more control.

I have exactly the same questions. Does anyone have an answers? To reiterate; Why add hubs? What are they for and what do they do?

Is there a manual section for Trip Planner? The Base Camp manual has no mention of it.

So far, I've found the regular Base Camp app much easier to create routes than Trip Planner. I can see the advantages of Trip Planner but i can't figure out the best way to use it. For example, once you create a trip, how to you add side trips in the middle? I'm going from L.A. to Albuquerque to stay with friends, then am using their house as my "base camp" to go north for 3 or 4 different rides on different days, then south to do the same.

Here's another snag in Trip Planner: How can I change the number of hours per day I want to ride AFTER the trip is created?

Also, Trip Planner ended a leg half an hour away from a big city. I wanted to move the end of the leg to the city. Although I figured out how to change the Trip Planner terminus, it would be much easier if I could click on the get info for the route end and have the usual search box pop up so I could just search and click.

Other than a bunch of features that are allegedly coming, I find this software to be quite excellent. It has a learning curve that's intense only because things have to be learned before you can fully understand what you are doing. Because of this, most of my trips are done with the route tool - click at the beginning then click on the end to create the route, then drag the lines around to take the roads you really want to take.

A detailed manual in PDF form would go a long way to ending frustration for a lot of people.

    Thanks.

  • I have not found a use for hubs. The key to trip planner (TP) is dates. To insert a route you must change the date range to include an open date of change a route in a date that has a route. I take a screen shot of the waypoints I want to use on my route because the only way to create a route currently in TP is to search for the waypoint or POI in the search field on TP day. Once you get two waypoints in the TP day, you can drag them around, copy and paste to change your route. IF someone knows a better way let me know.
  • Hubs are used for organization within a trip. Single hub trips (ie, what you get when you first create a trip) will work for many cases, but if you want more organization then hubs will help.

For instance, let's take the scenario that MARGARETANDDAVE describes: side trips. If you are planning a trip from LA to Albuquerque, but you want to spend three days riding up north, then a hub is a good organizational tool. The way I would approach this trip in BaseCamp is by making a trip from LA to my friend's house in Albuquerque. Now that I have my basic trip, I would add a hub that takes me up north. BaseCamp will automatically add the travel days required if necessary. If I'm heading back to my friend's house after my trip up north then add a hub that is at my friend's house to the end. See the screenshot to see what making a trip like this looks like. If you don't care about the extra organization that this provides then you don't need to worry about creating hubs.

To change the hours per day just delete the trip and start over. I don't see this as an issue because once you start changing start and end points of any route, I can't imagine how the programers could allow changing hours per day. Some of the users including myself have been requesting the popup for selections of waypoints arranged by folders and list in MyCollection. We think it would be better to have either MyCollection or Trip Planer in a floating window and be able to just drag waypoints to TP to create routes. Not sure how much coding would be required, but not having the organizational benefits and having to type to get waypoints is not ideal for me.

LIPKOWIT, thanks for the hub explanation. I think I would call it trip extender.
