Graph of plotted route won't display

How do I get the graph of the route I planned to come up? When I plan a route using Basecamp and then double click on the route, the window with the via point/directions/info etc comes up. The "graph route" link at the bottom is grayed out, and, of course, when I click it, nothing happens. How do I get the "graph" link active?

Thanks,

  • DBROWN048, I wouldn't recommend buying a separate map just to show elevation for routes created with City Navigator. Most of the newer CN maps already have DEM data included, but BaseCamp just hasn't been updated to utilize it yet. Hopefully we'll have time to do that, but I wouldn't want you to buy a map and then realize you already had the data. Granted the CN included DEM data is much lower resolution than the data you'd get with a dedicated TOPO map, but it should be fine for a driving trip.

Before we all get confused here's what was said by a Basecamp developer about DEM data in CN maps, and Basecamp. Unless someone knows otherwise Basecamp still cannot utilize DEM data included in CN maps.

Basecamp can however display elevation data in topo maps. Garmin topo maps contain DEM data, other topo maps may or may not but might read other data from the map to give *less accurate* elevation information.

Sounds like I'll be re-buying the Garmin Topo Maps disc.

Thanks guys for your help. Also, sorry about all the "confusion and delay" - as Thomas the Train would say.

Ok. So as I understand it CN maps do contain some DEM data but you can't utilize it right now. I have Topo's anyway...

PS: I sometimes look at the elevation profile of roads trips by swapping to one of my Topo maps that cover the route(s) I made with CN. I guess that sometime in the future I won't need to do this (in BaseCamp--assuming I'm using it :D).

Yup, that's what I understand, too
  • I think we're all on the same page/script now.

And I learned a new fact today. I can go back to bed now :) One is my limit these days.

    Sleep tight.
  • Ahhh. Correct assuming whatever Topo you buy says it has it. You'll be able to see elevation graphs of routes in BaseCamp/MapSource but not your nuvi.

Although some nuvis will show a 3D model of the terrain ...
  • Hi,

Just bought an Etrex 30 and downloaded some Birdseye Select 1:25k OS maps. I cannot get the Graph of elevation in planned routes to display (after hours of trying to find a setting). Elevation info is there in tracks I have walked.

Can anyone help a frustrated newcomer to Basecamp please?
  • The Birdseye Select maps don't contain elevation data, they are just images; that's why BaseCamp cannot create an elevation profile for routes (or for tracks created in BaseCamp).
The elevation data in the tracks that the eTrex recorded isn't derived from the map, but from the measurements (GPS altitude, barometric pressure) of the device itself.

Thank you very much for your reply J. Much appreciated. That is clear now. I have been hours trying to find a setting! If I buy an OS map microSD card for GB will that contain elevation detail? Bear with me I will quickly get up to speed!
