Graph of plotted route won't display

How do I get the graph of the route I planned to come up? When I plan a route using Basecamp and then double click on the route, the window with the via point/directions/info etc comes up. The "graph route" link at the bottom is grayed out, and, of course, when I click it, nothing happens. How do I get the "graph" link active?

Thanks,

***
  • To show the elevation graph you need to have a map that contains elevation data, like most topographical maps. City Navigator maps don't have elevation data.

Thanks JAVAWA for the quick reply. I do use City Navigator maps. What maps do I need to buy/download to get the elevation data. Will they conflict with City Nav maps in any kind of way?

    again, thanks
  • There are two types maps with elevation data that BaseCamp can use for the elevation graph:
    1. Maps with contour lines; BaseCamp will use the heights where a route crosses a contour line. The accuracy depends on the density of the contour lines, but generally this isn't very accurate. You can find a lot of free maps that have contour lines.
    2. Maps with DEM data (digital elevation model). These maps contain some kind of grid with elevation data, enabling BaseCamp to get the elevation at any point. This results in a graph with a much higher accuracy. Only Garmin can make DEM maps; most topos will contain it.

You can have several maps in BaseCamp without conflicts, but note that different maps yield different results when you create a route. You can however create a route on one map, and use it with another one to get a elevation profile.

So what map would you recommend I use with my NUVI 2555LMT and City Navigator? Can you explain in a little more detail you reply " You can however create a route on one map, and use it with another one to get a elevation profile."? I don't quite understand it.

    Thanks for your help,

    Dick
  • The idea is that you create your route in BaseCamp using the CN map, switch over to another map (that has elevation data), open the properties window of the route and click on the graph button.

I can't recommend a map because I don't know where you live... (or for which region you need a map). I'm not familiar with US maps, only European maps.

I live in the USA - North Carolina. I would like coverage of entire USA - possibly Canada. Definitely Alaska and Hawaii.

    Does this help?

Hi SUSSAMB, I own a NUVI 2555LMT and don't see a disc or download version for my device on the lin you provided. What to do? When we find a program compatible with my device, I assume that I just download it, install it. Do I design a route on my City Navigator maps and then how do I get it transferred to the topo map version - which I understand will not be as accurate as my CN maps?
    Thanks
  • Every device (that support maps at all) will support this map; the list isn't complete.
You don't need to transfer the route; you just have to switch maps in BaseCamp.

However, if your only need is an elevation graph it isn't necessary to buy a map; you could use the online service of http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/elevation , or an offline tool like JaVaWa RTWtool. With RTWtool the route has to be converted to a track first, and you need to download some necessary files yourself (RTWtool tells you which, and where)

Sounds good. Well between you two guys, you've got me off and running.

    THANKS AGAIN,

    DICK

PS: can someone send me an email with our "conversation" on it so I've got a permanent record. Thanks
