Base Camp now App Store only?

So the App Store BaseCamp is now 4.2.1, but the posted-for-download one (on Garmin.com) is still 4.1.2.

Is the standalone (non-App-Store) version going to be updated, or should I just switch to the App Store version? I didn't see anything about it becoming App-Store-only, but it wouldn't be surprising.

I don't *really* care that much, but I've already got the standalone and disk space is tight enough that I'd rather not have two copies of everything (especially maps) sitting around.
  • Not sure why switching to the App Store version would result in duplicate map sets, but I hope we get an answer about versions soon.

For me, the big question is whether the App Store version is crippled in any way, due to restrictions imposed by Apple. I can't find specifics, but swear I recall this being the case with earlier versions of BC.

The App Store version will most likely not have "Buy" links in it. Where in the non-AS version there were links to "Buy Maps" and a link to the BirdsEye subscription page. Garmin would have to pay Apple 30% commission on those "in-app" sales.

I've been using v4.2.1 now for a few days and don't see anything of substance missing yet.

But if you want to download it's live:

  • BaseCamp has been released on the web and App Store. There are some restrictions in the App Store version, but mostly inconveniences. You have to manually approve the use of each device for instance, but only once.

    Download versus App Store

I just installed the "download" version and sure enough there are the "Buy" links within the application. I see no other functional differences. Of course I've only had an hour to play...

It took the AS version six restarts to show me the "device approval" popup. It would just not recognize my USB attached devices:confused:. All is well now:cool:.

I'd like to see a list of just how Apple has supposedly restricted the App Store version.

I was rather happy for BaseCamp to ask permission to use my Time Machine filesystem. "Heck no! BC has no business browsing my Time Machine!" Just as I appreciate having direct control over whether it scans my USB stick or SD cards.

Historically Apple restricts in-app purchases. Thats another good thing in my book. I see Garmin Express has the basics for in-app purchases of vehicle icons. Yawn.
