Kenwood DNX890HD and BaseCamp Trip Planner

Good day,

July 1st I head out on a 7000+ mile trip from Houston Texas, up to Quesnel British Columbian and back. Just bought a Kenwood DNX890HD head unit for my truck.

Up until now I have been using google or bing maps and exporting stuff to my Garmin500, however I want to make this Kenwood work.

Just installed BC 4.2.0.4 and want to use trip planner to plan the trip, then transfer the trip to my Kenwood on SD memory card.

The first thing BC said was 'you have no maps'.

Do I have to purchase maps separately for use on my computer? Will this work with the Kenwood?

Any help to get me started on this would be much appreciated. I have a support request in but they say 3 days for a reply.

Regards,

I looked at the Kenwood DNX units some time ago. They use the nuvi Trip Planner architecture which does not support the importing of save Routes from BaseCamp - or anywhere else. You can export your Tracks (Trip Log) and you can import Custom POI's. You can also transfer Waypoints (Favorites) and Contacts between the Kenwood and the Garmin Smartphone Link app as well as some of the Live Link Services data.

They did a nice job of integrating the Garmin software into the Kenwood head but without the ability to transfer Routes & Tracks to the unit it was a "no-deal" for me.

FYI, got a response from Garmin:

Thank you for contacting Garmin International.

I would be happy to help you with this. The Kenwood devices would not work with BaseCamp. You may be able to use MapSource but you would have to connect the Kenwood to your computer.

Can Waypoint, Routes, etc. be transferred to a Kenwood device from a PC?
As long as the Kenwood device is connected to the computer with a USB1 cable then this will allow it to receive certain files. Below is a list of all available options to send to the Kenwood device.
Ability to send these files via USB:
    Waypoints
from MapSource, MapQuest and Google Maps
    Routes
    from MapSource only
    Notation:
1 - Requires a USB connection which in most cases if found on the back of the device.
2 - It is not recommended to load extras - Voice Files, Vehicle Icons from the Garmin Garage, etc. - as these files can cause instability within the mapping software.

Looks like they were able to improve the software enough since my first look that you can use MapSource to load routes via the local USB. You just need to run a USB extension cable from one of the two ports on the back of the DNX (that was my plan had I bought one).

Does your Base Camp upload also apply to Kenwood's DNN770HD?
    Thanks,
