Multiple City Navigator Europe NT maps with BaseCamp?

I have City Navigator Europe NT installed on BaseCamp for my 1490T (with Lifetime Updates), but have just bought City Navigator Europe NT on dvd for my new Oregon 650. I now have two identically named maps in the drop down list on BaseCamp; one of which is for the 1490T and the other for the Oregon 650 - but which is which?
If I transfer files from the wrong map to my device, it won't unlock, but yet BaseCamp won't allow me to rename the maps so that I can tell them apart. Surely I don't have to transfer and hope each time?

You should only have two listings in the dropdown box if you have one of the units (or equivalent) connected to your PC.

The DVD copy should've installed to your HD while the other should be on your units.

The map for the 1490 is also on BaseCamp because I have the Lifetime Updates subscription, and have always opted to install to my Mac and the device. Maybe I should now delete the City Nav for the 1490 from the Mac (now the the DVD one for the Oregon is on there)?
  • You could use GMTK to change the filenames. GMTK is available here http://www.javawa.nl/gmtk_en.html

Oops you're on a Mac not PC. That said you shouldn't have two copies of the same map product. Are you 100% sure they're the same version?

Yeah - 2013.41. I'll just delete the 1490 one, cos that will always appear in BaseCamp when I plug the device in. I can use the DVD one I installed today to plot etc, because I can still copy waypoints across from any map to any device - so I only need one copy anyway. That will also free up about 3.5Gb!

Well I don't know on about a Mac but on the PC maps are saved to the same place by the DVD installer and the lifetime update installer unless you override the default.

Now on a PC the map unlock code is stored in a different location to the map data so deleting the latter is safe. I don't know if that's true on a Mac.

That's probably why he posted this in the Mac forum. :p

On the Mac your maps are stored in /Users/{you}/Library/Application Support/Garmin/Maps where {you} is your user account name on the Mac. Take a look in this folder, you should see one .gmap file for each map that is installed.

But if you want to view what's installed or remove a map, there's a better way to do that on the Mac. Look in your Applications folder and launch Garmin MapManager. This program is part of the Basecamp install and does not have a counterpart on Windows. MapManager will present you with a list of all maps that you have installed. Select the map you want to delete and click on the "gear" icon in the bottom left corner of the window to choose the delete option.

Needless to say, you should be sure to have a current backup of your Mac before deleting anything - just in case. If you use Time Machine regularly, that should be covered. :D

That's the location for Garmin maps that are Locked and other non-Garmin Maps. If you install Garmin Unlocked Maps (World Map, Topo's, etc.) then they will be in:
    /Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/Garmin/Maps/.

Thanks, that's interesting. I don't have any Garmin unlocked maps on my Mac, they're on my PC so I don't even have that other folder. But as noted, MapManager is the way to do things on the Mac. It lists all your maps and also shows where they're installed. It seems odd to me that Garmin doesn't provide a Windows version of MapManager.

My old Topos are indeed found in ~Library/App Support/Garmin/Maps, not in the HD's Library folder. Not contradicting you, but wondering if you are on a different OS or if long ago I put them there and they "migrated" to my newer iMac when it arrived? I'm running OS 10.8.4.
