I have City Navigator and the included 100K topo in my 650t. I can create an off road route in BaseCamp with no problem using City Navigator but if I try and create a route using the 100K topo it wants to take me on some far off indirect route or shows a straight line route like I am in an airplane. I have dirt bike selected for my activity and just can't figure out why I can't route the back roads using the topo maps. I watched a bunch of videos and tried to do a search. Any help or advice is appreciated.
Are the 24K maps able to do route "proper" planning?
Garmin's 24K Topo's do include routing data but they're not road maps. In other words you can use them for routing on roads but don't expect every street to be there.
This would mostly be for dual sport riding on logging roads and forest roads so it sounds like the 24K maps would be good to have. Thanks for the quick reply. :)
I have the Northeast US topo 24k. They use Navteq data, just like City Navigator and the streets all seem to be there. The POI's are mostly the same as well - gas stations, restaurants, stores, etc. BUT they are not updated on any regular schedule, so you may be getting a map that's a few years old. The current version of City Navigator might have more streets, just because it's newer but not by design. :)
But I suggest you look at the maps online before purchasing. There are many complaints that the 24k maps show fewer trails and dirt roads than the 100k topo. Find the DVD version of the map you want here, then drill down to find the coverage tab on the product page. It should have a link to their online map viewer. https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/maps/on-the-trail-maps/topo/c452-c456-c503-p1.html

I own Topo US 100K (DVD) and a few 24K topo's (DVD) as well. The detail on the two is different but neither is fully accurate or complete in my area. Only a few of the local hiking trails are present on the 24K and what ones do exist aren't accurate. That said (and I know because I work on them) hiking trails are sometimes rerouted for various reasons. Even Forest Service hiking trails are sometimes moved.
