Transfering routes from Basecamp 4.1.2 to Nuvi 265WT

I can see that the routes that I created in Basecamp are on my GPS' data (both internal stockage and SD card).;)
But when I look for them in My Favorites, I can't find them. Where must I look for them?
  • Even if your 265 supported route transfer The option is not worth much on the Nuvi line. The routes get recalculated and unless you use the exact same preferences in BC and on the GPS the routes will change. Transferring a route to my 1490 is very awkward. You move the route from BC to the 1490, go to my data and export on the Nuvi to routes. To delete the original imported route, you have to use your mac and delete from the mounted Nuvi volume. It is such a hassle. I just import my favorites for a trip and create the routes as needed on the Nuvi about 98% of the time. This method will work well for you.
  • I don't use a Mac or BaseCamp (PC) for creating/transferring routes but I don't have many issues using MapSource with my 1490T.

I've created a number of routes in MapSource, made them go the way I want using "via's" (as MapSource calls them), and sent them to my 1490T. And yes those routes go the way I designed.

Routing, on any Garmin model, has been a source of complaints for a decade or more. Advanced users have long since figured out to get around or, at least minimize, routing issues.
  • They go the way you designed if you have the same preferences and maps on the GPS and MapSource. It is a multi step process to upload and the routes are Re-Calculated with the software on the Nuvi. BaseCamp will do the same as MapSource. With the 200 Nuvi series that do not accept uploaded routes, you can upload the start and end points plus the the via's and get the same results. I don't have a Montana, but it is my understanding the Montana series does not (optional) re-calculate uploaded routes. This means you can upload routes that take advantage of many different routing options you find in BaseCamp and the Montana will follow the BaseCamp route.

Does anyone have any ideal of Garmin will make a Nuvi that does not recalculate the route.

    Thanks
  • Some folks are saying the 2013 models don't
  • I have the Nuvi 2597 (a 2013 model) and it DOES recalculate the route. BaseCamp/MapSource use a different computer program than the Nuvis to calculate the routes. Not sure of all the differeces but a major one is speed on the route. BaseCamp/MapSource use one speed for each specific type of road which you can modify. The Nuvis use the speed limits embedded in the map which you can not modify. Just the fact they use two different speed sources can easily result in different routes between the same two locations. That is why I make sure I have sufficient waypoints/vias to ensure I get the route I want.

It is not when Garmin will make a Nuvi that will not recalculate the route (I want the Nuvi to calculate the route based on the speed limit), but rather when will Garmin have BaseCamp/MapSource use the same speed source as the Nuvis to calculate the routes.

Yes well some people don't seem to understand that GPS units (whatever models) are not PC's/Mac's and do not have quad-core processors and gigabytes of RAM. I've heard that the route calculation algorithm for computer and device software is the same (or similar) but I'm sure there's some differences due to available resources (memory, CPU speed etc).

There are a few potential problems with taking a transferred route as is.

One is if the maps in the device and the ones used to create the route are different. Another is making detours (should the route recalculate then?). Another is the memory required to save a complete (every turn etc) un-recalculated route.

Now these potential problems have possible solutions but they're not necessarily trivial (even if non-technical people think they are).
  • Thanks for the info on the 2597. Not recalculating the route is just a term used by some members of the forum, and yes it is not a accurate term. A route that is not recalculated would have to track in my book. I think speed it just one of the many variables involved with re-calculating the route. With the 1490, I have a few preferences like Fastest or Shortest. With BaseCamp I have many more options like road avoidances or feature type avoidances plus you get to select from 12 different activities like ., if I set BaseCamp to the exact same preferences as my 1490, I get the desired route. I have the same maps with speed on my Mac as the Nuvi. BaseCamp uses the same algorithm as my Nuvi but I have many more options in BaseCamp That I can't match on my nuvi. Waypoints is a way to over come preferences and shape your route. I used to think the only solution was for the GPS to have all the routing options of BC or at least the Nuvi have all the driving routing option and when you upload a route sent the options with the route.

Just reading the post from the Montana users, they say just turn off recalculation and it works. I wounded how the Montana reproduces the route. Does it add additional waypoints or track data? Does it just have all the BC routing options and match options.

    Thanks
