Help with drag and drop to change a route

Please excuse me if this is well known, though I cannot find a solution to this.

As a Mac convert, in Mapsource I was able to drag to change a route. Apparently it's possible in Basecamp, but does not seem to want to work for me.

Using Macbook Pro, Mountain Lion (10.8.3), Basecamp (4.1.2). I get the pop up box recommending I use the alt key (the two pronged fork icon thing), tried this with select and other tools, but the route does not move.

What am I missing? It's really not intuitive!

Thanks in advance :)
  • Well it is quite simple on the Windows version, hopefully this will work on the mac version too. Select the route. Then select the Insert tool (looks a bit like a pencil). Hover between the 2 waypoints that you want to 'rubber band' and you should get a thick black line between the two. Left click and release, then drag the line and left click where you want the new point.
  • Actually, it's easier than that on a Mac. Holding the Option (Alt) key down, you may either: drag a point on the track to change its position or drag from any place on a track segment to create a new point and position it.

Edit: Oh, re-reading your OP, it looks like you might be trying to reposition/shift the entire track ?? Not sure about that one.
  • Nope - not happening.

Mac version does not have the insert tool. Do I need to have a 'point' on a route (you wrote track - only track as opposed to route?) to move it. holding down alt key does nothing :(
  • OK, lets clear a few things up. The OP was asking about a route, not a track. The Windows version and Mac version of BaseCamp are as similar as chalk and cheese ;-) Windows specific advise is next to useless in the Mac version.

    Now here's the deal.

#1. using the "Select" (arrow) tool alt click and hold on the route you wish to edit. Upon moving the cursor a rubber band line should appear, and the route can be drug to a new location.

#2. Run the terminal script in https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?29261-Beta-4-0-0-5-Changes&p=143167#post143167. This negates the need for the alt keypress during this or a waypoint move.
  • Ah, solved - I'm using a Macbook Pro with touchpad set to touch (rather than press to click). The route dragging really needs the use of a conventional mouse to hold on click, drag and drop. Not really Mac lap compatible, fortunately I also have an iMac.

Thank you all for input :)

Go to System Preferences_Accessibility_Mouse and TrackPad_Trackpad Options and set your trackpad options as shown.

Then a double tap/hold allows you to scroll with the trackpad even after releasing the hold. Once the point is positioned where you want it tap (or click) to release. I use a trackpad with my iMac and have my MacBook Air set up the same way. With a little practice it's possible to start the edit, use the keyboard Cntr Z shortcut to go to the zoom tool, zoom in on your prospective relocation and then Cntr S for the selector. The rubber band will now be active again as soon as you move the cursor and you can very accurately place the point.
  • Excellent advice from killtimer. An alternate approach, if for some reason you don't want drag lock enabled, is to use two fingers. I use forefinger to drag and thumb to click on the trackpad.

Put the arrow on your route, click with your thumb and while holding, drag with your finger.
