Can't upload KMZ files ("not valid")

HI, I am trying to import a KMZ file created in Google Earth and I get the message "survey.kmz is not a valid KMZ file and could not be opened." I have uploaded many KMZ files and never had issues. Any ideas of what this could be? It has about 15 tracks and probably 2,000 way-points.

Could the issue be that some of these are nested in folders? I do not think it is a corrupt file.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated! Sara
  • You might try "flattening" the file (removing the nested folders but I know that is a lot of work). The Import limit for waypoints was raised to well over 2000 so that shouldn't be an issue. You might also try using another program, like GPSBabel, to see if the file converts from KMZ to GPX. GPSBabel will usually find errors if there are any and it's error messages are verbose compared to BaseCamp.

    Cheers,

BaseCamp is fairly strict when it comes to invalid KMZ files, and Google Earth can be very hit and miss at creating valid ones. Would you mind sending a copy of the KMZ file to [email protected] so we can see if this is the issue or there is a problem in BaseCamp? Thanks.
  • Am planning a six week tour around Kenya and after mapping it all out on Google Earth I ran into exactly the same problem faced here BaseCamp gave the message "...... is not a valid KMZ file and could not be opened". I scoured the web and help sites but also could not find any answers as to why it arose; so frustrating. Following some help from friends, particularly Greg, it was resolved by doing the following: I saved each track and pin .KMZ file on my hard disk individually; then via highlighting all the files imported them 'en masse' into BaseCamp. BaseCamp imported the files but gave the same error message only on the actual files it did not like. I was able to then accept the rejection of each non conforming file quickly and easily. The problems fell into two categories: (a) one particular track, out of 24, was rejected; I shortened the track and it was then accepted (perhaps it was too large); and (b) all my Pins on the Equator (we will be crossing it eight times) were not accepted (perhaps theBaseCamp does not like a Pin exactly placed on the N/S divide) - I have left these off. This way I have about 95% of what I wanted in BaseCamp and now in my Garmin too. Hope this helps someone.
  • Unlike your GPS device, BaseCamp has no limit on Track Points. I have test Tracks that have over 40,000pts. I also have waypoints on the Equator in Africa and So.America that work fine. I'd guess you still have some issue with that data that wouldn't import into BaseCamp. You might try converting it with GPSBabel to see if there was something amiss in the KMZ info.
