BaseCamp 4.2 beta is live

BaseCamp 4.2.0.2 introduces several new features and fixes some old issues. The Trip Planner, changeable libraries, significant improvement in find, and different profiles for legs of a route are some of the biggies. Note that several features are still a work in progress, but we wanted to go ahead and get feedback on the current state.

A complete list of features:
• Added Trip Planner (work-in-progress) (MacOS 10.7+ only)
• adds easy way to create trips
• create trips over several days
• round trip support
• printing trips
• add destinations along the route
• flying support (airport and flight look-up)
• time zone support
• Added initial support for different libraries which is patterned after iPhoto libraries. Feel free to try the feature out, but note that the next version will possibly break libraries created in this beta. This feature can be found under Preferences->Advanced->Workspaces
• Added support for different route profiles for different legs of a route
• Added support to have different folders and lists with the same name (as long as they have a different parent in the folder hierarchy)
• Added support for UK postal code search
• Added support for Yelp search (work-in-progress)
• Added support for named search (far away POIs should be found if it's an exact name match)
• Added support for category search (you can type "Hotels, Las Vegas, NV")
• Added quick search (hover over the map to invoke it)
• Added Irish Transverse Mercator grid
• Added support for displaying BirdsEye while in Basestation mode
• Added support for displaying and saving the track of the Basestation itself
• Added support for displaying the most recent update time for Basestation contacts
• Fixed issue with Garmap Southern Africa Topo & Rec 2012.3 - NT not being displayed BaseCamp

It can be downloaded from here

Edit: The second beta drop (BaseCamp 4.2.0.4) is now live. Use the above link to get it or go to https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?36289-BaseCamp-4-2-beta-is-live&p=179071#post179071 for more details. Note that 4.2.0.2 will not autoupdate to 4.2.0.4. You will need to manually update.
  • I'd agree with that. While I haven't used mixed routing yet (no time to play with the beta) how DRTBYK describes how it should work is how I imagined it would.

    Trip Planner - Day-mode

While working on a Trip in Day-mode I was unable to insert a Day in the Itinerary. I could only Add a Day at the end of the Itinerary. In Date-mode I was able to insert days between dates. We will need to due both types of inserts in Trip Planner.

Currently, once a Trip Planner "new trip" has been started in "number of Day's" mode, there is no way to change the "Day 1", "Day 2", etc., Icon's to Date's - even if the Route start dates are changed in the Route Properties. It would be much nicer (more intuitive) to right-click on the "Day" Icon and be allowed to enter a new start date. This action would of course change the route properties for all routes in the Trip as well as propagate through the Trip forward or backwards and update all of the data including the screen Icon's.

I work with rather long and complicated trips and I can't pick a start date. So I start with Day-mode and then plug-in the dates - sometimes the end date first!

    Cheers,

Great idea. This feature has been implemented for the next beta.

I've been using mixed-routing for a long time - well at least since I realized it worked in v4. Then as now, to use mixed-activity-routing one had to either switch maps to a non-routable map and then back to a routable map or use the Activity button in the route properties window. The latter requires you to do some rather unintuitive workflow and constantly redo the along-road routing segments each time you want to add a Direct Activity segment for example. My guess is that the majority of users will not figure out this workflow.

What I was hoping for was that as I created my route, when I switched Activity, only the via points placed after that would be affected. And, once I switched Activity again, my previous routing would NOT be recalculated (which in effect removes the mixed Activity).

Please work on the Mixed Activity a bit more - or enlighten me as to how this feature is suppose to work.

Here is how this feature was intended:

I should note, however, that we still have work to do on this feature. For instance, adding a new point to the route currently removes any mixed routing which is an issue. Additionally, we are planning to make it such that any points added use the previous point's routing mode.

I don't understand this comment. Can you please elaborate on the difference in adding days in "date" mode vs "day number" mode? They are supposed to work the same.

LIPKOWIT, thanks for the explanation. I totally missed the Activity Icon on each viapoint. That would be a very acceptable workflow - when it works. Currently, selecting the last point's Activity and changing it has no effect on the following points.

When I'm in DAY mode and I have an Itinerary of say six days and I want to add a day in-between Day 3 & 4 I don't seem to be able to do that. In DAY mode it would seem as though I should be able to just Add a Day and then drag it to the point in the itinerary and drop it. That doesn't work.

    Also, when I try to Add Destinations in DATE mode, I get some rather strange behavior;

    Search along-route in Trip Planner

After having spent the past few days thrashing around inside Trip Planner, it seems the BC Dev Team does know the benefits of Along-route searches. The screenshot below shows me looking for gas 200miles out along my route (I have a 320mi range but 200mi is a good time to stop:cool:). The Add POI "slider" is really handy but setting your search Options ahead of time makes it more productive.

Now, if the Dev Team would just automate that slider+search-criteria we'd have Along-route search ;)
  • Has anyone found a easy way to use trip planner and set the day trips (start and end) in addition to the over all start and end waypoints.

At any intermediate point that you want to be your over night stop, you just set the departure for the next day at what ever time you desire.
