BaseCamp 4.2 beta is live

BaseCamp 4.2.0.2 introduces several new features and fixes some old issues. The Trip Planner, changeable libraries, significant improvement in find, and different profiles for legs of a route are some of the biggies. Note that several features are still a work in progress, but we wanted to go ahead and get feedback on the current state.

A complete list of features:
• Added Trip Planner (work-in-progress) (MacOS 10.7+ only)
• adds easy way to create trips
• create trips over several days
• round trip support
• printing trips
• add destinations along the route
• flying support (airport and flight look-up)
• time zone support
• Added initial support for different libraries which is patterned after iPhoto libraries. Feel free to try the feature out, but note that the next version will possibly break libraries created in this beta. This feature can be found under Preferences->Advanced->Workspaces
• Added support for different route profiles for different legs of a route
• Added support to have different folders and lists with the same name (as long as they have a different parent in the folder hierarchy)
• Added support for UK postal code search
• Added support for Yelp search (work-in-progress)
• Added support for named search (far away POIs should be found if it's an exact name match)
• Added support for category search (you can type "Hotels, Las Vegas, NV")
• Added quick search (hover over the map to invoke it)
• Added Irish Transverse Mercator grid
• Added support for displaying BirdsEye while in Basestation mode
• Added support for displaying and saving the track of the Basestation itself
• Added support for displaying the most recent update time for Basestation contacts
• Fixed issue with Garmap Southern Africa Topo & Rec 2012.3 - NT not being displayed BaseCamp

It can be downloaded from here

Edit: The second beta drop (BaseCamp 4.2.0.4) is now live. Use the above link to get it or go to https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?36289-BaseCamp-4-2-beta-is-live&p=179071#post179071 for more details. Note that 4.2.0.2 will not autoupdate to 4.2.0.4. You will need to manually update.
  • Big problem

    BUG WARNING

If you decide to push the limits of the new "Choose Library" feature and use removable media you "may" risk rendering BaseCamp inoperable, even to the point where a reinstall will not work.

    What Happened:

As an experiment I created a new Library on a SD card using my iMac, closed BaseCamp, and then moved the card to my MacBook, launched BaseCamp and pointed to the SD card as the library location as allowed under Preferences. Success. It worked perfectly. I made a few changes to the collection. un-mounted the card and went back to the iMac. This is where it went bad. I made the mistake of launching BaseCamp BEFORE mounting the SD card. This was the result:

And then it crashed. Mounting the SD card and relaunching BaseCamp resulted in the same crash. Returning the SD card to the MacBook and launching BaseCamp resulted in the same crash. Re-installing BaseCamp, crash.

In order to get a reinstall to work I had to run a cleanup utility in order to get a complete erasure at which time the new instal was successful and I was able to access the original cloud based Library file.

I'd fiddle with it more, but I'm leaving in a few days on an extended motorcycle trip and I need everything working. ;-)
  • Bug: custom waypoint transparency incomplete

    Just installed 4.2.0.4 in 10.8.4.

I copied my waypoint icon files (png and bmp) to Custom Waypoint Sybols folder. They work fine in BC 4.1 but with 4.2 only the first few pixels are drawn transparently.
  • dull icons

Oh come on... Not everything apple does is good and has to be copied.
Gray toolbar icons?? Gray route icons??

Dark gray on light gray background is NOT easy to see.

Dull is NOT the new cool.

What's next? Gray list icons? Gray waypoint icons? An e-ink-based gray-on-gray GPS device??
  • Good day,
July 1st I head out on a 7000+ mile trip from Houston Texas, up to Quesnel British Columbian and back. Just bought a Kenwood DNX890HD head unit for my truck.
    Regards,

    Sounds like a cool trip.

Usually you connect a Garmin device to the Mac, then it's displayed in BC and you can transfer data both ways.
If you purchased a Garmin map on a µSD card, the map should be available in BC as long as the device is connected.
You can also buy map DVDs where you install the map to the Mac. The map can be used without the device and can be transferred to the device with MapInstall.

As I don't know if the Kenwood is compatible at all and your question doesn't seem directly related to the BC beta, you might want to start a new thread? As this one is already pretty cluttered :-)
  • I've asked this before, but maybe here it gets the attention of a BaseCamp developer:

In the Windows version of BaseCamp it is possible to correct a distorted map view by adding a certain value for the projection angle to the Windows Registry.
I did some tests with plist files to check whether the Mac version of BaseCamp does support that possibility too, but without success. So my question is: does BaseCamp for the Mac support this correction; if so, how can we accomplish this?

The Mac version does support the projection angle setting in the preferences. It's just as hidden as it is with PC BaseCamp, but I was able to change it using the plist editor on the preferences file:

It should work identical to the PC, except it is not shared between applications.
  • Great! I've got it working; it will be an option in the Mac version of JaVaWa GMTK with the next update.

Here is how this feature was intended:

I should note, however, that we still have work to do on this feature. For instance, adding a new point to the route currently removes any mixed routing which is an issue. Additionally, we are planning to make it such that any points added use the previous point's routing mode.

I love the implementation of this, although you need to take in account the recalculate bug, but I ran into issues...

I vaguely remember being able to export a route like this before perfectly to my Zumo 660, but since a few weeks I am unable to export mixed activity routing routes to my Zumo. Basecamp always crashes on these routes, and processes other routes without any problem...

The error I get when exporting goes like this:

Activity: Loading preinstalled map at path: /Volumes/GARMIN/GARMIN/gmaptz.img
CardInstallWorker calling ProductCancelled because no maps could be found
CardInstallWorker calling ProductCancelled because no maps could be found

    File: ../GLO/GLO_AutoPtr.hpp Line: 138
Snapshot: Calling function 8 on object gdx::GpsDataTransferRef_t

Obviously, /Volumes/GARMIN/GARMIN/gmaptz.img is a file that is present on my Zumo 660...
