BaseCamp 4.2 beta is live

BaseCamp 4.2.0.2 introduces several new features and fixes some old issues. The Trip Planner, changeable libraries, significant improvement in find, and different profiles for legs of a route are some of the biggies. Note that several features are still a work in progress, but we wanted to go ahead and get feedback on the current state.

A complete list of features:
• Added Trip Planner (work-in-progress) (MacOS 10.7+ only)
• adds easy way to create trips
• create trips over several days
• round trip support
• printing trips
• add destinations along the route
• flying support (airport and flight look-up)
• time zone support
• Added initial support for different libraries which is patterned after iPhoto libraries. Feel free to try the feature out, but note that the next version will possibly break libraries created in this beta. This feature can be found under Preferences->Advanced->Workspaces
• Added support for different route profiles for different legs of a route
• Added support to have different folders and lists with the same name (as long as they have a different parent in the folder hierarchy)
• Added support for UK postal code search
• Added support for Yelp search (work-in-progress)
• Added support for named search (far away POIs should be found if it's an exact name match)
• Added support for category search (you can type "Hotels, Las Vegas, NV")
• Added quick search (hover over the map to invoke it)
• Added Irish Transverse Mercator grid
• Added support for displaying BirdsEye while in Basestation mode
• Added support for displaying and saving the track of the Basestation itself
• Added support for displaying the most recent update time for Basestation contacts
• Fixed issue with Garmap Southern Africa Topo & Rec 2012.3 - NT not being displayed BaseCamp

It can be downloaded from here

Edit: The second beta drop (BaseCamp 4.2.0.4) is now live. Use the above link to get it or go to https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?36289-BaseCamp-4-2-beta-is-live&p=179071#post179071 for more details. Note that 4.2.0.2 will not autoupdate to 4.2.0.4. You will need to manually update.

    v4.2.0.4 Issues:

    1. Garmin Adventures Library always shows expanded when BaseCamp is started even though the GA Library was Collapsed when BC was Quit.

    2. Adventures - TAGs: Need a way to clear/edit Tags so bad tags don't keep dominating the Tag's list.

    3. Trip Planner - Print Itinerary: Doesn't Show/Print Custom Symbols.

    4. Trip Planner: Editing (add/change/delete) a Route Point Activity should follow the same behavior as when you edit a route normally in BC. Especially when editing mixed-Activity Routes using the Route Properties window. Currently lots of crashes and/or strange behavior.

    5. My Collection - Trip: "Send to your Device" causes BC to crash every time.

I get a lot of crashes when trying to drag a waypoint from on day to different day. After trying to copy paste a route form one day to another, I finally realized I could just edit the date by clicking. The pop up calendar is neat but if I have route on May 8, nothing planned for 3 days and a trip on May 12 and I change the may 8 route to May 9, The whole trip starts a day later, everything below moves down and a day is added. My trip had 3 panels; going, nothing planned, and coming home. Seems like adding a day in the each panel has a different result. I just want to drag a route like I drag an event in iCal. I can't find a easy way to insert a day. Dan, what am I missing?

As far as crashes go, I think...it's a beta and we just need to let the Dev folks know our experiences. But more to your point, as far as I can tell, you cannot insert a Day in either Day or Date mode. I think this is a very important requirement. One doesn't usually know what the Itinerary is before one starts to put it in BaseCamp. There needs to be facilities for doing a fair amount of "what if" work - which invariably requires moving days around and inserting days in between days in a Hub. I also think that with the Hub concept, moving a Hub in the sequence will be necessary.

Relative to a Days route, I think there needs to be the ability to have more than one Route within a Day. Your point PSEABOLT of relating the Itinerary to the Calendar: this is a Trip Planner and trips have lots of activities - many times more than one in a day. We plan a Days activities and in doing so we create routes but we might want to have alternate activities (routes) within the same day. Example of "alternate": I plan a hike, ride, etc., and lay out a route, but 2/3 of the way along the route I want to include an alternate way to the destination. My decision for taking the alternate could be based upon time, fuel, energy or weather but I should have the ability to include that alternate route in my Days activities. When I do this now, I simply put a waypoint+proximity alert at the point where my alternate route starts.

Thanks for the crash reports (and other bugs) guys.

I am adding a way to add a day before or after the currently selected day via right-click menu, so that will be there in the release.

Having multiple routes in a single day, and have the itinerary show them both, is not currently planned due to the many complexities involved.

Exactly the reason I'm not even touching it until it's at the release state.

KILLTIMER, Just to let you know, I have had no issues with the multiple "Collections" feature. It even made the transition from beta v4.2.0.2 to v4.3.0.4 without a hitch for me.

Trip Planner is shaping up to be a really helpful addition to BC. Thanks for listening and the feedback. Of course, as developers, you folks realize that when you give us something we will always ask for more. ;)

I guess it isn't that big of a deal to Exit out of Trip Planner to create my alternate-route in the Day-list.

I still have great expectation that the GPS Hardware folks will provide an App that will take advantage of the Trip Planner Itinerary and "list structure" similar to the Adventures app on my Montana. In that scenario, our "alternate" routes could show in a Day's activities where a "Day" was equal to an Adventure. And yes, I have shared that "Feature Request" with the Montana team in case you were wondering.

I notice similar behavior in 4.1.2 with any user created list folder. Only solution I've found is to collapse the folder, make some edit (e.g.. add a new list then delete it), then close BC. If I open the folder and just view some contents, then close the folder, it's open again on next startup.

As I was "exercising" Trip Planner I had the following condition arise: I had two Hubs with multiple Days (in Day-mode). I then deleted the Day's one at a time in the first Hub. When the last day was deleted the second Hub went from Day 1, Day 2, to the following...

    Something amiss...

And v4.2.0.4 still has the same behavior in that (as you stated) one needs to make an add/change/delete to the database (My Collection) before BaseCamp saves a new version of the "view". Just changing the view does not actually save a new version of the FolderData. But, even making a database edit has no effect on the Garmin Adventures "view" - it ain't changin'.

  • Created a trip with the planner, Three hums 17 days. when I view the routes in my collection, why are the routes not sorted by date?

I think it it is doing a alpha sort and maybe just naming routes 09/05/12 instead of 9/5/12 would fix the problem.

    Thanks
