BaseCamp 4.2 beta is live

BaseCamp 4.2.0.2 introduces several new features and fixes some old issues. The Trip Planner, changeable libraries, significant improvement in find, and different profiles for legs of a route are some of the biggies. Note that several features are still a work in progress, but we wanted to go ahead and get feedback on the current state.

A complete list of features:
• Added Trip Planner (work-in-progress) (MacOS 10.7+ only)
• adds easy way to create trips
• create trips over several days
• round trip support
• printing trips
• add destinations along the route
• flying support (airport and flight look-up)
• time zone support
• Added initial support for different libraries which is patterned after iPhoto libraries. Feel free to try the feature out, but note that the next version will possibly break libraries created in this beta. This feature can be found under Preferences->Advanced->Workspaces
• Added support for different route profiles for different legs of a route
• Added support to have different folders and lists with the same name (as long as they have a different parent in the folder hierarchy)
• Added support for UK postal code search
• Added support for Yelp search (work-in-progress)
• Added support for named search (far away POIs should be found if it's an exact name match)
• Added support for category search (you can type "Hotels, Las Vegas, NV")
• Added quick search (hover over the map to invoke it)
• Added Irish Transverse Mercator grid
• Added support for displaying BirdsEye while in Basestation mode
• Added support for displaying and saving the track of the Basestation itself
• Added support for displaying the most recent update time for Basestation contacts
• Fixed issue with Garmap Southern Africa Topo & Rec 2012.3 - NT not being displayed BaseCamp

It can be downloaded from here

Edit: The second beta drop (BaseCamp 4.2.0.4) is now live. Use the above link to get it or go to https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?36289-BaseCamp-4-2-beta-is-live&p=179071#post179071 for more details. Note that 4.2.0.2 will not autoupdate to 4.2.0.4. You will need to manually update.

I am not able to reproduce this issue. We will have a new beta out soon, please let me know if you are still seeing this issue in the new beta.

I will install the new beta but I am able to repeat this behavior consistently. To see the described behavior, I have to exit Trip Planner and edit the Route on the map via drag/drop.

The new beta build (4.2.0.4) is available here: http://www8.garmin.com/software/BaseCampforMac_4204Beta.dmg. Note that BaseCamp 4.2.0.2 will not autoupdate to 4.2.0.4. A manual update is required.

Changes made from version 4.2.0.2 Beta to 4.2.0.4 Beta:

    - Completed the ability to pick different BaseCamp libraries much like iPhoto and iTunes libraries. This feature can be found under Preferences->Advanced. For the advanced course, click on .bclibrary bundle in finder to open it and thank Apple for creating bundles.
    - Added more map detail levels. Dirt roads and POIs can now be seen at a much higher level.
    - Added Yelp results to Trip Planner and Quick search.
    - Added ability to create waypoints from Yelp find results. Note this only works if you are using a map with address search capability.
    - Added ability to adjust the default speed used for routing. Not as powerful or complicated as the Windows version, but it doesn't use words like collector roads either.
    - Added trip summary to printed trip itinerary.
    - Added a main menu entry for Trip Planner.
    - Added ability to change the date of any day in trip planner by double clicking on the day/date icon.
    - Added a Trip Planner quick start tutorial.
    - Added feature to fill the rest of a destination's days up whenever lodging is added.
    - Added better syncing of the end point of one day with the start point on the next.
    - Added ability to add days to a Hub/Destination.
    - Fixed some time zone time issues in routes.
    - Updated graphics to be Retina display ready.
    - Made several robustness improvements to Trip Planner in general.
    - Added the ability to add a Garmin Adventure to a trip.

    v4.2.0.4

    - First thing that got my attention is that the BC Toolbar Icons went to grayscale - don't like it. To hard to differentiate icons when not using text+icon.

    - I understand the Delta Speed-slider for Routing road-types. But, it would be so much more informative if you just showed the programmed "default speed" after the named road-types (see example) so folks new to this don't have to figure it out on their own:

    - The working mixed-Route editing workflow rocks. Very intuitive. Now...wouldn't it be awesome if we could copy a segment of Track points and "insert" them into a Route between two Direct Via Points!!!

    - Trip Planner: I know this is still a work in progress and I haven't had time to run through all of my interest points but so far it's looking really good.
Comments:- Nice touch not forcing the Arrival Time I set, based on calculated arrival:

    - Issue: Add Garmin Adventure - You are use the Create Route from Track function to append the converted track onto the days route if it is within a travel day. Arbitrarily(?) deciding how many Via Points to use. This causes several problems when it comes time to move the Trip to a GPS. Garmin GPS will only allow 50 Via Points in a Along-road Route. In addition what if the Track that is being added is a Hiking or otherwise non-motorized Trail? I think we need to have the option of "Append to Trip" or "Add Activity" (which would create a "standalone route/track associated with that Day in the Itinerary. In addition, if Appending, we need to be able to set the Via Point count limit for ANY Track to Route conversion within BaseCamp.

    - Issue: You removed the ability to set Via Point count in support of Create Route from Track. Why? It's a critical aspect of the Track to Route conversion as noted above as well as in my daily activities of creating route plans for GPS's that don't support Tracks.

That's it for now from me...

Oops, forgot to mention, the floating sizable Overview Map window ROCKS!!! Thanks, I dig working on multiple displays.

Aside from the Adventure "append" issue mentioned above, when I do add an Adventure I can't figure out how you're coming up with the Total Time calculation.

    ENLIGHTENMENT:

OK, I just figured out where the Total Time is coming from in the above scenario. BC is taking the "proposed time" in the Adventure and adding it to the Route time that the Adventure Track was appended to. This is not going to work out very well for various reasons. I'd like to see an Option for Adding an Adventure that would allow you to chose the type of route Activity used in the conversion of the Tracks and and option for the converted route to be placed in the Itinerary as an activity in the same day and not appended to the adjacent route for that day (if there is one). I also think it will be important that the inserted Adventure Routing Activity can be changed in the same manner as has been done with any other route in the itinerary.

I'll have to look into the issue with route time and adventures. Thanks for the heads up.

Regarding the issue with the number of points in a route and adventures, we'll see what we can come up with to keep the total via point count to less than 50.
  • I'm not able to reproduce this issue. To confirm the steps:

    1. Make a waypoint named "GA stop 1"
    2. Make a waypoint named "second waypoint"
    3. Rename "second waypoint" to "GA second waypoint" to get the error?

    Try this.

Create a waypoint with the tool ( just click)
Insert a few letters and a space in front of the auto named waypoint
Click choose and select a new icon.
I think you will get the dialog.

Sorry I gave bad instructions in the original post.

  • The trip planner is a welcome addition and I probable should do more experimentation before posting. If any of my feature requests are currently available, please let me know.

    1. I would really like to have my waypoint collection in a list for selection when editing or adding to a planner trip route. Searching near the slider is a great feature but I can never remember the waypoint name I want to use. I usually have to exit trip planer, take a screen shot of the waypoint collection and return. Maybe a show all waypoints arranged by distance from slider point would be an easy and good solution.

    2. I would like to be able to insert a new trip planned route into the current plan. For example, I might want to extend the hours on the trip home or I might want want to add 3 day excursion in the middle of the trip. I would like to be able to request round trips or one way trips.

    Thanks

edit for 1. Maybe a show all waypoints arranged by distance from slider point would be an easy and good solution.
or center of screen if no slider is available when creating a new route.

Yes, it would be nice to be able to refine searching under the "User data in My Collection" search criteria by having a sub-filter of the various data types. As I've been working with the Trip Planner, I've gotten into the habit of setting the search preferences before I use the "Slider" in the Trip Planner and then selecting the "More" option at the end of the drop-down list. More results and a lot more meaningful.

    v4.2.0.4 Trip Planner: Display overrun...

When I work in fullscreen mode (which is most of the time) and try to use the Trip Planner search "Slider", the resulting drop-down window overruns the display (see below). Makes it impossible to choose "More".
