Custom POI's

I've been working with my Custom POI's the past few days and noticed the Custom POI "Info" window.

These are of course POI's that have been "installed" on the attached Device (in my case a Montana 650). I'm curious as to why this feature is hidden in the MAP menu rather than a My Garmin Devices right-click option or a View menu option?

While I'm on the POI topic, upon selecting the "info" option, the resulting window shows the Custom POI's that are installed on the attached device (see below):

My question is: what is the "Enable" check box suppose to do? It has no effect on the Montana's POI's.

Cheers,

Unchecking the Enable box should hide all Custom POIs in the GPI file. There are many Custom POI files that have every speed camera in a country, not exactly something you need to see in BaseCamp.

azdrmn, your reply would indicate that if the POI file is "Enabled", I should see the POI's within BaseCamp (on the map). Is this correct?

    Correct.

But I didn't in v4.1.2. I'm currently using v4.2.0.2 beta and I don't see them on the map there either. My [Montana] GPS is connected and all of my POI's on the GPS are showing in the POI Info window and are "Enabled". What am I doing wrong?

This screenshot is what it should look like if BMW Motorrad Dealers were enabled:

  • The POIs may be enabled but it's just not clear that they are. To test this, with the Enabled check box checked, choose Find->Find Points of Interest and then choose Custom POIs in the pull down. The POIs should show up there. The reason you aren't seeing them on your map is because they show up at the same level as map POIs, which is very low (500ft at max detail). Custom POIs are considered auxiliary map data, so their display mimics regular POIs. That's also why the info dialog shows up under the Maps menu. Hope that helps.

Also the BMW POIs have an issue. They will show up with magenta surrounding the icon. This will be fixed.

Thanks for the feedback azdrmn. After spending 5 hours screwing (technical term) with POI icons, yes, it seems that they are "there" but the ones that are having icon issues don't show any icon at all or show a very small dot (which is almost impossible to see at any level of of view).

Speaking of "view", I understand that POI's are technically Map data but as a "user" I expect to see My Data somewhere in the Device data views. It seems that it would make some sense to have a POI's "list" under the "My Garmin Devices" just like the Maps are shown. Then if I click on a POI file the POI's would show in the data pane below.

    Cheers,
